Phil Collins: No Jacket Required Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman August 31, 2025

In our recent Foreigner: 4 Blu-ray review, I mentioned how seemingly inescapable that band was on both radio and the then nascent MTV when 4 was first released in 1981. A few years later, much the same could be said about Phil Collins, who kind of suddenly seemed to be omnipresent, achieving huge single and album hits while also becoming a mainstay of the fledgling music video scene. It may be debatable how much music videos promoting (because, let's face it, that's what music videos were designed to do) Sussudio and One More Night helped propel those singles to Number 1 on the singles chart from Billboard, but one way or the other those videos were in regular rotation for quite some time. In that regard, it may be salient to mention that No Jacket Required managed to crack the Top 10 albums of the year for two consecutive years (1985 and 1986), again testament to the long lived nature of its appeal.

Many of the recent audio Blu-rays from Warner Music Group and Rhino have offered static menus with track listings, but this disc has an appealing set of slideshows accompanying each tune, as documented in the screenshots. The track list for the album is:
  1. Sussudio
  2. Only You Know and I Know
  3. Long Long Way to Go
  4. I Don't Wanna Know
  5. One More Night
  6. Don't Lose My Number
  7. Who Said I Would
  8. Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore
  9. Inside Out
  10. Take Me Home

As mentioned above, there actually is a video component to this release, with AVC encoded slideshows in 1.78:1 and 1080p accompanying all the songs. There are repeated images used throughout, but they're typically assembled differently, and there are unique shots offered on virtually every song, if you want to sit there and watch. Some of the stills are quite charming, with Collins hamming it up for the photographers.

Phil Collins: No Jacket Required Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

No Jacket Required features 2025 Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 mixes (all by Steven Wilson, which means some may not even need to read any further), along with (commendably) the original 1985 stereo mix (2016 remaster) in LPCM 2.0. I mentioned in that Foreigner 4 review linked to above that my hunch was fans of that band and that album might have one niggling complaint in that Rhino didn't include the original stereo mix on either the audio Blu-ray or any of the CDs, and that one qualm has nicely been eliminated here. All three of the 2025 mixes sound absolutely fantastic, and both of the surround mixes in particular beautifully open up some of the (yeah, admittedly quaint sounding now) synth percussion and real percussion that Collins so effectively utilizes in several tunes. Some of the propulsive riff driven material, like those great horn punches suffusing Sussudio, are kind of epic now in both the Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 iterations. Even some of the relatively quieter ballad material like One More Night spreads out audibly into all of the surround channels.

Phil Collins: No Jacket Required Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  n/a of 5

There are no supplements like unreleased tracks or the like on the audio Blu-ray. This is housed in a cardboard sleeve, and the left side encloses a small booklet with a nice essay by Steven Wilson giving some fascinating background information on both what the album meant to him but perhaps for certain types of audio nerds (ahem), technical information on the source tapes and transfers.

Phil Collins: No Jacket Required Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  5.0 of 5

Truth be told, I was probably not alone in maybe suffering from Phil Collins video overload at least during this general era of MTV, but in that regard, while it may be heresy to "solo Collins" fans, I actually think I like his work with another Phil which was released right before this album, namely Philip Bailey's Chinese Wall, better than at least some of the tunes on this album. That said, there's no denying how iconic this album has become, and once again Steven Wilson delivers some gorgeous sounding remixes. The slideshows are a kind of fun bonus. Highly recommended.
