Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman September 16, 2018

It may be indicative of just how much life there still is in the Tall Man that Well Go USA is now revisiting the venerable Phantasm franchise for what amounts to the third time. As I detailed in our The Phantasm Collection Blu-ray review, Well Go USA had already released some of the Phantasm films as standalone entries when the set came out (one which included a Shout! version as well, in a somewhat odd development), and now the label is back with two standalone releases which may help fans who had already purchased the previous standalone outings and who didn’t want to spring for the Collection set to complete their personal collections. However, while the video and audio on these two new releases were to my eyes and ears substantially similar if not absolutely identical to the Collection releases, it should be noted that Well Go USA has arguably cut a few cost corners by putting these both out on BD-25s without all of the supplements the Collection versions offered.

For my thoughts on the film, please see our original Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray review.

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

While this is, as mentioned above, on a BD-25 rather than the Collection version's BD-50, I really noticed no major changes in either video or audio quality on this release when compared to the Collection Blu-ray. You can read my thoughts on the transfer in our Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray review.

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

Audio is substantially similar if not outright identical to the track detailed in our Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray review.

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  1.5 of 5

In what may be a distressing development for some diehard Phantasm fans, Well Go USA has opted not to include all of the supplements detailed in our original Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray review. This disc features the following bonus material:

  • Phantasm III: Behind the Scenes (1080p; 8:52)

  • Deleted Scene (1080p; 00:11)

  • Trailer (1080p; 1:19)

  • Audio Commentary with Stars A. Michael Baldwin and Angus Scrimm

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

The good news is that fans who already had the previously released standalone Phantasm offerings can now buy individual titles if they don't want to spring for the Collection. That said, the bad news is that this release doesn't offer the same bonus material the Collection version does. Technical merits are on a par with the first release despite this one being offered on a BD-25 instead of a BD-50.
