Perfect Stranger (2007)

When investigative reporter Rowena Price learns that her friend's murder might be connected to powerful ad executive Harrison Hill, she goes undercover with the help of her associate, Miles Hailey. Posing as Katherine, a 'temp' at Hill's ad agency, and Veronica, a girl Hill flirts with online, Rowena surrounds her prey from all sides, only to discover that she isn't the only one changing identities. The closer Rowena gets to finding the truth, the more we see how far people will go to protect it.

Perfect Stranger Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman February 16, 2021

'Perfect Stranger' is currently available from Mil Creek as part of a three film bundle with 'Wind Chill' and 'Straightheads.' Do note that Sony released the film years ago to Blu-ray.

Rowena Price (Halle Berry) is a crack journalist who has just nailed a sexually deviant U.S. Senator who doesn’t practice what he preaches. But even if her story is a slam-dunk, higher-ups in her office, who are cuddly with the senator, put a lid on the story and “request” Rowena take some time off from work. Rowena refuses and quickly finds herself a new target. When her longtime friend Grace (Nicki Aycox) approaches her with dirt on top advertising executive Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis), Rowena and her friend Miles Haley (Giovanni Ribisi) make up a new identity for her, land her a job as a temp at the agency, and set her loose to discover the dirtiest secrets she can find on Hill. But as she gets closer, she finds herself drawn into an illicit, high stakes world where nothing is as it seems.

Perfect Stranger Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.5 of 5

Mill Creek brings Perfect Stranger to Blu-ray with an MPEG-2 encoded 1080p transfer; Sony's 2007 release was encoded at MPEG-4. But never mind the tech specs. This one actually looks quite nice overall. It's filmic as it is, retaining a pleasing, light grain structure. Details are fairly sharp and sure, certainly not reaching the peak of the format's capability but offering expressive, confident, steady, and satisfying detail output to essentials like faces and clothes as well as in environments beyond, such as in the modern office spaces or in various apartments seen throughout the film. Colors are a bit of a letdown. The film is dark and moody as it is and there's not a sense of exploding color vibrancy and brilliance at work, but the contrast seems good for the film's color timing and general photographic mood. Clothing, lipstick, and colorful décor do stand out as well as the film's innate appearance allows. Black levels are deep enough and skin tones appear fine. There are no serious print flaws of note and compression is handled quite well, even as the film shares a single disc with two other pictures. It could certainly be better, but given the encode, the necessary compression, the film's dour look, and even the release's price point, there's not much room for disappointment here.

Perfect Stranger Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.5 of 5

Perfect Stranger's Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack may not offer the exacting presentation standards of a lossless encode but the track is rather good, anyway, and compliments the film and conveys its sonic needs with more than adequate space and definition. The track offers some expressive expansion when the senator's voice "flows through" the World Wide Web around the five-minute mark. There is some nice stage expansion and depth in play on a subway platform at the 10-minute mark. The sense of authentic space and detail is fairly impressive here and elsewhere, particularly in the bustling H2A offices. Music flows with good clarity and spatial command, including a modest surround integration. Dialogue primarily drives the film forward and presentation is rock-solid for prioritization, front-center placement, and clarity.

Perfect Stranger Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  n/a of 5

Sony's Blu-ray was not exactly feature-packed. It included a featurette and a handful of trailers. Mill Creek has not even included that scant selection of content; as it ships in the above referenced three-pack, there are absolutely no supplements of note.

Perfect Stranger Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  2.0 of 5

Perfect Stranger may be an imperfect film but it offers enough thrills and sex appeal, and a couple of Hollywood's then-hottest leads, to ensure a passable time at the movies. Mill Creek's featureless Blu-ray may be best described as "passable," too. Even as the Blu-ray presentation lacks even an AVC video encode and a lossless soundtrack, the presentation as-is actually isn't at all bad. Fans of the film should be more than satisfied with the technical presentation.
