The release introduces an exclusive new 4K restoration of Paper Moon, which is also available on 4K Blu-ray. You can see our listing and review of this release here.
I viewed the 4K restoration in native 4K and after that spent time with the 1080p presentation of it on the Blu-ray. I did comparisons with the only other release of Paper Moon that I have in my library, which is this Region-B release produced by British label Eureka Entertainment in 2015.
The entire film looks strikingly healthy and boasts a terrific organic appearance. I did not have to do a lot of comparisons with the previous release to conclude that the 4K restoration offers a substantial upgrade in quality because the improvements were practically everywhere and very easy to recognize. Density, delineation, clarity, depth, and fluidity are better. Also, the 4K restoration has a superior grayscale that produces some of the most significant improvements. You can get an idea what type of improvements to expect if you compare this screencapture from the new 4K restoration and this screencapture from the previous presentation.
The 1080p and native 4K presentations of the 4K restoration are equally pleasing. However, on a large screen, I think that several sequences look slightly sharper and more attractive on the native 4K presentation. Still, the Blu-ray is as easy to recommend as the 4K Blu-ray release. (Note: This is a Region-A "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-A or Region-Free player in order to access its content).
There is only one standard audio track on this release: English LPCM 1.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
I viewed Paper Moon in native 4K and then spend time with the 1080p presentation of it on the Blu-ray. The comments below are from our review of the 4K Blu-ray release.
The audio has been redone. On the previous presentation of Paper Moon, I could occasionally notice extremely light background hiss. On this release, I did not notice any, and I had the volume of my system turned up quite a bit. However, the dynamic intensity remains the same, which is hardly surprising considering that Paper Moon has a very modest soundtrack with prominent organic qualities.
Peter Bogdanovich's Paper Moon is a fabulous period piece that sees rural America very much like the films of John Ford and Howard Hawks did. Its script is excellent, and the entire cast that was gathered for it is fantastic, but the film belongs to the charming Tatum O'Neal, who remains the youngest person ever to win a competitive Academy Award. Criterion's upcoming combo pack release introduces a gorgeous exclusive new 4K restoration of Paper Moon, which is exactly the home run its fans have been patiently waiting for. The 4K restoration is also available on 4K Blu-ray. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
