Pain & Gain Blu-ray Movie Review
A painful double dip with little gain.
Reviewed by Martin Liebman December 4, 2013A little more than three months following its Blu-ray debut, Director Michael Bay's 'Pain & Gain' has been re-released as a red-cased special edition that contains the supplements the original Blu-ray lacked. Video and audio presentations and language options remain the same.

Mark Wahlberg reacts to the practice of double-dipping.

Pain & Gain Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

The A Game: Michael Bay's 'Pain & Gain' is an eight-part feature that chronicles the making of the film and looks at the characters in it. It is
the only supplement on the
disc. The disc arrives in a unique red standard-sized Blu-ray case and features a textured slipcover meant to look like a tub of protein powder (the
transparent red plastic and gray lid makes it a dead ringer for BSN's tasty Syntha-6). UV and iTunes digital copies are also included.
- Still a True Story: Ripped from the Headlines (HD, 11:25): Cast and crew, including Technical Advisor Ed Dubois, recount the true story behind the film and Bay's framing of the story as a Dark Comedy.
- Back to Basics: Michael Bay's Vision (HD, 8:30): Michael Bay's work within a smaller budget and a constrained schedule are studied, as is his vision for the film, his fast-paced style, his experimental filming techniques, and more.
- American Dreamer: Daniel Lugo (HD, 5:25): A profile of the character portrayed by Mark Wahlberg and Wahlberg's physical training for the role.
- Passion Player: Paul Doyle (HD, 5:26): A profile of the individual portrayed by Dwayne Johnson. The piece also looks at Johnson's preparations for the part and the uniqueness of the role for an actor of Johnson's type.
- Dirty Work: Adrian Doorbal (HD, 3:48): A quick look at Anthony Mackie's character, with emphasis on his physical aspirations and mental condition in the film.
- Victimless Crime: Victor Kershaw (HD, 5:43): Another brief portrait, this one of Tony Shalhoub's character. It also highlights the making of one of his most crucial and dangerous scenes in the film.
- Diamonds in the Rough: Locations (HD, 8:45): Cast and crew take a look at working in Miami and Coral Gables, shooting locations, set design and construction, creating authentic era details, and filming in Bay's own home.
- The Real Deal: Law Enforcement (HD, 8:43): An examination of law enforcement's role and portrayal in the film, making action scenes, and more.
Pain & Gain Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Pain & Gain is a fine, underrated film in the Michael Bay canon. It tells an endlessly fascinating story of greed, tragedy, physical perfection, and mental corruptness, made whole by excellent acting and keen filmmaking. The initial Blu-ray release was absent supplements. This disc remedies that oversight, but there's no reason this couldn't have been the one and only release. The supplements are fine, but are no more in quantity or quality than is normally included with a typical higher end film. A sample packet of Wahlberg's "Marked" whey protein powder would have been a great touch to round the product into finished form. Recommended only to those who have yet to buy the film.
