Oppenheimer 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker November 21, 2024

'Oppenheimer 4K' returns just in time for the holidays in the second Walmart Exclusive SteelBook courtesy of Universal. Starring Cillian Murphy, the film won seven Oscars at the 2024 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), and Best Actor (Murphy), and gives viewers insight into the life of Robert Oppenheimer and his world-changing work on the Manhattan Project. The three discs found within (a 4K UHD disc containing the feature film, a Blu-ray containing the feature film, and a second Blu-ray containing special features) are identical to those which comprise the standard UHD release. With the previous SteelBook release out of print, this latest edition offers collectors a great alternative. Please scroll down to the 'Special Features and Extras' section below for a discussion of the newest SteelBook. A Digital Code is also included.

For an analysis of the feature film, please refer to the review of the standard UHD release.

Oppenheimer 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

The cover of the latest Oppenheimer 4K Walmart Exclusive SteelBook presents another explosive image. Here, the front image is of Murphy's Oppenheimer standing before the scaffolding at the test site as an explosion flares behind him. Murphy is placed in the center and the scaffolding stretches to, and beyond, the top of the image. Again, the color scheme here is a riot of gradations of yellow, orange, and black. The film's title is located in the center at the bottom and is printed in red block letters. Above it reads, "A film by Christopher Nolan". The image on the reverse showcases the same fiery cloud that was found on the back of the previous Walmart Exclusive SteelBook, the image is simply zoomed-in and shifted up slightly so that the Universal logo in the bottom left corner and the product number in lower right now sit in blackness rather than in the previous version's fiery cloud. The image on the reverse maintains the same color scheme as the front, and the spine does as well. On the spine, the film's title appears centered in the same red block letters seen on the front. Opening the SteelBook, the Special Features Blu-ray disc sits on a hub on the left side. On the right side, the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray of the feature film are stagger-stacked, each on its own hub, with the 4K UHD disc on top. Removing the discs reveals a two-panel image from the film of Murphy's Oppenheimer peering out at the scaffolding that looms over the test site before the event that would change the world. As there aren't any tabs on the left side, the included Digital Code floats freely inside the SteelBook. This iteration features a slightly glossy finish which hides most, but not all, fingerprints associated with normal handling.

For a comprehensive look at the on-disc special features, please refer to the review of the standard UHD release.

Oppenheimer 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  5.0 of 5

Fans of the film who missed the first SteelBook and dedicated SteelBook collectors alike will want to add this Oppenheimer 4K Walmart Exclusive SteelBook to their collections. Maintaining the same color scheme as the previous version, this one provides a larger and more recognizable picture of Cillian Murphy on the front that is every bit as dramatic as the prior edition. Which one is superior will come down to personal preference. The most significant difference between the two, in my opinion, is that this version sports a slight gloss finish that doesn't hide fingerprints quite as well as the other's matte finish. The film remains as powerful, poetic, and impactful as ever. Highly Recommended.
