Target continues their ongoing line of Disney/Pixar exclusive 4K variants with Onward, released simultaneously alongside the wide-release 4K edition and its Blu-ray counterpart. Disc contents are identical on both releases but the packaging size and content are slightly beefed up here with an exclusive Filmmaker Gallery and Storybook. Unlike earlier Target 4K variants such as Toy Story 4 and The Little Mermaid, however, the inner packaging is a keepcase identical to the standard 4K edition, which makes this more of an exclusive slipcover than a unique collectible.

As mentioned earlier, this three-disc release is housed in a black keepcase with two hubs (the Blu-rays are stacked) and artwork identical to the regular 4K edition. This differs from earlier Target-exclusive 4Ks and Blu-rays, which typically came in custom Digipaks with full-spread inner prints and a more stylish appearance. Although a familiar Gallery Book is tucked inside the exclusive outer slipcover (and the package as a whole at least matches the overall aesthetic of those earlier releases), as a whole it feels like a cheaper product will less thought put into it.

I really loved Onward -- maybe even a little more than our own Marty Liebman, who reviewed the standard 4K and Best Buy's exclusive Steelbook. Target's exclusive Gallery Book edition lies somewhere in-between those two options, offering identical disc content but only marginally better packaging than the standard 4K: the outer slipcover makes this look like other Target-exclusive Disney and Pixar packages, but surprise!...there's a plain old keepcase inside rather than a more deluxe Digipak with extra artwork. Still, as of this writing it actually costs less at Target than the standard 4K edition, so this one's still a pretty safe bet whether you're a die-hard Disney collector or not.
