One Piece Film RED is one of the best achievements in the long history of One Piece as an anime and manga franchise. From an original idea by manga creator Eiichiro Oda, One Piece Film RED is quite spectacular with plenty of music and action. A musical entry in the anime franchise, One Piece Film RED is one of the most distinct entries in the film series. One Piece Film RED is the 15th feature-film in the entire franchise. One Piece Film RED went on to become one of the highest grossing films of all time in Japan. One Piece Film RED celebrates 25 year of One Piece and the milestone of reaching over 1,000 episodes – the longest running anime in the history of the medium.
Luffy and the entire Straw Hat Pirates crew are on an epic journey to see the world-beloved singer Uta perform live in concert. Uta is one of the biggest musicians in the entire world and her fans are rabid with anticipation – eagerly awaiting her latest performance. Uta is known for keeping things close to her chest but she simultaneously decides to let loose and reveal more to her fans.
What mysteries are there to the beloved pop idol Uta? As the epic concert begins, chaos also ensues when the Navy, Big Mom Pirates, Heart Pirates, and others end up creating commotion at the concert. Can the Straw-Hat Pirates save the day and still see the entire show? It’s an epic adventure for Luffy and friends.

For more information on One Piece Film RED, please refer to the review of the standard-edition Blu-ray.

Released on 4K UHD by Crunchyroll, One Piece Film RED is presented in 2160p HEVC / H.265 in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 widescreen. The feature-film is provided a stunning 4K presentation. The 4K UHD release expands on the standard Blu-ray presentation and provides something even more robust and colorful. The animation looks better than it ever has and has improvements over the 2K Blu-ray option.
For one thing, the release provides a HDR color grade. The HDR color grade is provided in both Dolby Vision (for those equipped for Dolby Vision playback) and HDR10. Dolby Vision offers an additional layer of metadata on top of the HDR10 standard. Dolby Vision provides some subtle changes that are not on the standard HDR10.
The HDR10 grade looks fantastic and fans will be pleased with how exceptional everything looks. Colors "pop" with considerable depth and clarity. The image is robust and provides wonderful immersion.
There is so much vibrancy to the animation. The animation looks significantly improved over the 2K Blu-ray. I was surprised by how large of a difference I noticed in some sequences during the presentation. So much so, in fact, One Piece Film RED 4K looks like one of the best reference-worthy 4K UHD discs ever made available for anime to date.
The depth and color reproduction was surprisingly exceptional. An already fantastic Blu-ray of One Piece Film RED has been improved on with the 4K UHD release. The presentation also provides an enormously high 77.86 mbps bit-rate. The bit-rate alone makes some difference and allows for subtle refinements. The high bit-rate is above-and-beyond expectations.
One thing to consider is how streaming compares to physical media. Even 4K UHD streaming (which is not always available on every 4K title), is usually limited to only 30mbps max on the best streaming video services (such as Netflix or Apple TV+). The best streaming option available impresses when managing to reach 30mbps, but is still a far cry away from a 77.86 mbps presentation.
That physical media 4K UHD encoding bit-rate is more than double the bit-rate of the best possible 4K streaming on any streaming service. Fans will appreciate the enormous quality provided to One Piece Film RED on 4K UHD. This is clearly a reference disc and one that fans will cherish owning.

The release is presented in Japanese Dolby Atmos surround sound (with English subtitles). The release includes a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround sound audio core. The audio core is used as the base for the immersive Dolby Atmos sound mix. The Atmos mix adds the additional atmospheric channels to the Dolby TrueHD sound presentation. An English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound option is also provided on the release.
The Dolby Atmos surround sound option provided to the original Japanese language version is one of the best sounding audio mixes I have ever heard on an anime release to date. The audio track is an exceptional and reference worthy track. The audio provides a sense of depth and immersion that floored me.
The songs are crystal clear and the vibrancy of the musical performances are stunning throughout. The robust audio presentation features an enormously high bit-rate and the audio presentation is reference worthy. The action scenes are similarly impressive with the epic battles ensuing between the Straw-Hat Pirates, Luffy, and the rest all the more engaging.
The Atmos mixing impresses in spades and all speakers have superb directionality and depth. Throughout the entire feature-film presentation of One Piece Film RED, it continually impressed on me how special the Japanese Atmos sound mix was. I was taken aback repeatedly by how incredible the mixing and lossless presentation was on the 4K UHD.
The English language audio option, when toggled to, provides a less satisfying audio presentation by comparison. The English lossless audio is still engaging and worthwhile but it lacks the added depth, clarity, and finesse of the more immersive Japanese Atmos mix. The track isn't quite as showy and engaging and comparing the two audio options, it was clear the Japanese sound mix was superior comparatively. Even so, English dub fans won't feel too disappointed – it is still a clear, engaging, and lossless audio presentation – just without the Atmos mixing specific to the original theatrical release.

The limited edition comes packaged in a gorgeous steelbook package. The stunning steelbook makes an incredible collectable and it is something that is well worth owning for any steelbook collector. The 4K release provides one of the most luxurious and beautiful steelbook designs on the format to date. An incredible package design and something fans will cherish holding in hand and displaying on their shelves. The artwork selection is fantastic, too – simple but perfection.
On disc supplements include:
A Faint Memory! Luffy and Red-Haired's Daughter Uta! (HD, 23:55)
A Pledge for the New Genesis! Luffy and Uta! (HD, 23:55)
The Captain's Log of the Legend! 'Red-Haired' Shanks! (HD, 23:55)
Trailers (HD, 2:41)
Web Previews (HD, 00:47)
Unfortunately, the release does not offer additional on-disc supplements over the standard edition Blu-ray release. The release could have been expanded on further with more bonus features. Even so, the addition of a bonus features disc is commendable and Crunchyroll should be praised for their effort.

One Piece Film RED is a stunning achievement. One of the best anime features in the entire legacy of One Piece, the musical is enormous fun and fans will cherish the outstanding filmmaking. What an incredible feature-film. The storytelling is well-done and the entire production is ambitious. The experience is a remarkably special one.
The 4K UHD presentation is stunning and far exceeded expectations. The 4K UHD provides a reference quality transfer with an enormous bit-rate. The 4K UHD release also provides a similarly outstanding Dolby Atmos sound mix for the Japanese language version.
The 4K UHD presentation will satisfy fans with a quality release that is well worth owning for any One Piece fan. The combo pack also includes the previously available standard Blu-ray edition. The release also provides a bonus disc featuring extra supplements.
The limited-edition release includes collectable steelbook packaging. The steelbook design is stunning and it adds an extra element of fun collectability to the special edition 4K release. Highly recommended.
