One Piece: Collection 33 brings together more action-packed adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as the crew continues to battle villains and fight for the future of tomorrow. The Straw Hat Pirates are a big bunch of lovable heroes and misfits. The group find themselves in new action-packed adventures throughout episodes 795-818.
The One Piece anime remains as the longest running anime series of all time. The series is based on the beloved manga series created by Eiichiro Oda. The manga is one of the most iconic of all manga series, too. The manga is always on the bestselling charts in Japan.
The anime spans both theatrical and television productions. As one of the worlds longest running series, One Piece is an essential classic for anime enthusiasts young and old. The series is available on physical media by Crunchyroll (who continues the releases following the merger combining Funimation with Crunchyroll). It is nice to see the series continue to be released on physical media with these great collection box sets.
The gang is back for more pulse-pounding adventures. This time around, the journey brings the heroes some new challenges. Luffy is in a determined fighter mode: the journey to fight the Cracker agents and tackle their threat to the entire Straw Hat crew. Carrot and Chopper find themselves becoming trapped within a strange maze involving mirrors. Can anyone find a way out of the maze before it is too late? Could this be the end for Chopper?
Along the epic mission, the island journey is one that brings plenty of new challenges and encounters. The journey is never over for Luffy and the other Straw Hat Pirates – plenty of adventures for Luffy, Sanji, Brook, and the rest of the heroes await. Even Nami is in a fierce mode and the heroes won’t simply allow the villains to win and take the stage. Island fun and mayhem collide in Collection 33.
Monkey D. Luffy (Mayumi Tanaka) remains at the heart of the series. It is hard to imagine One Piece without Luffy and his never- ending sense of charm. The character is iconic and one of the most memorable characters in the history of the medium.
The cast of supporting characters includes Nami (Akemi Okamura), Sanji (Hiroaki Hirata), Tony Tony Chopper (Ikue Ōtani), Usopp (Kappei Yamaguchi), Brook (Yūichi Nagashima), Roronoa Zoro (Kazuya Nakai), Miss Wednesday (Misa Watanabe), Franky (Kazuki Yao), and Nico Robin (Yuriko Yamaguchi). These characters are a lovable bunch and it is wonderful to spend time with the crew of the Straw Hat Pirates. One of the biggest cast of characters and most expansive ensembles to be featured in any anime series.
One Piece became a huge legend in anime history because of the wonderful cast of characters at the heart of it all. Without these great characters – both central and supporting – the series probably wouldn’t have become such an endearing favorite with anime fans. One Piece is essential as a showcase for great anime characters and these characters come straight from the mind of the creator, Eiichiro Oda.
The genius behind the manga brought these characters to life and the team involved on the anime series do a solid job of bringing these characters from the pages of the manga to the TV screen. The result is the characters are well translated to the realm of the anime storytelling and it manages to make a big difference – something vital and important to making the series become a huge success. It is no wonder that audiences continue to tune in to One Piece and why it has been able to become the longest running anime series of all time.
One Piece has always played a significant role in my life to one degree or another and it remains one of my all-time favorites. I grew up reading the manga series on a regular basis and the anime managed to become one of my favorites, too. The anime manages to do a great job adapting the original manga. This is one of the things that sets it apart.
The animation is incredible. The series is one of the best-looking anime series ever produced. With an incredible team of animators at the helm, the series imbues great visuals and creativity at each turn. The artistry of the animation is top-notch and the animators understand these characters and what needs to be done to make the action tick forward. One Piece truly sets sail and manages to showcase imagination in spades with great character designs (true to the manga) and gorgeous background art showcasing an ever-expanding world. Without a doubt, these aspects of the production help to keep One Piece feeling invigorating.
The score by Shiroh Hamaguchi (Final Fantasy: Unlimited, Ah! My Goddess) and Kōhei Tanaka (Angelic Layer, Desert Punk) is outstanding. The music plays a fundamental role in the production and why it works. The score is enormous fun and it is often stuck in my head after watching the series. After watching some episodes, it usually is on rotation in my brain for a good while and that is a clear indication of how classic and memorable the music is on One Piece. The music always perks me up considerably and makes me smile.
The action sequences are impressive, too. One Piece is a fun adventure series and there is a ton of great action-adventure with regards to the series. The battle sequences are epic and expansive. The scale and scope remains enormous. The result is truly spectacular. These action scenes bring to life the manga and the artistry is on full display. Fans of the best action anime series (such as Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho) are going to appreciate the scope of the battle scenes.
One Piece is always fun. The series finds a great balance of action, comedy, and adventure. This keeps it worthwhile. One Piece: Collection 33 brings together more exciting episodes of the long running anime classic. The series has a huge fanbase for a reason. It’s now a global phenomenon. The anime is great entertainment and fans won’t want to miss out on more exciting adventures. For fans collecting the releases, One Piece: Collection 33 is another hit worth picking up for the collection.
Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, One Piece: Collection 33 is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. Featuring outstanding animation, the series looks bright and crisp in high-definition on the release. Outstanding.
The series has gained a lot of great clarity and detail during its transition from standard-definition during the earlier production years to the native high-definition of the later seasons. The animation is bright, colorful, and engaging on the release. The HD animation looks superb and there is a lot to appreciate about both the line art reproduction and the background animation.
Crunchyroll provides the series with a solid video presentation and it looks great overall. It is also worth noting that physical media continues to offer fans a superior experience for those seeking the absolute best possible presentation quality. The video bit-rates are a bit higher compared to streaming video services. For those seeking the best encoding and highest bit-rates, streaming still doesn't quite match physical media.
The release includes lossless audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 2.0 and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles). The lossless audio encoding on the release provides audiences with a quality audio presentation. The audio clarity and soundstage are enjoyable with lossless encoding. The audio provides good dialogue clarity and overall detail.
The audio tracks sound nice and robust on the presentation. Audiophiles seeking the best audio quality achievable will be pleased to know that physical media continues to offer the best audio experience. Streaming video services only offer lossy (non-lossless) audio encoding by comparison. For someone determined to get the best audio quality possible, physical media rewards with the best clarity one can find.
The release comes with a nice o-card slipcover. The set is designed to match the previously released box-set collections. The package design will look nice on the shelf beside the other releases in the collection (for those who have been collecting all of the previously released box-sets).
On disc extras include:
One Piece Season 13: Voice Actor Panel (HD, 31:24)
Textless Opening Song "We Can!" (HD, 2:32)
