One Piece: Collection 29 Blu-ray Movie Review

The action-packed fun of One Piece continues!

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard May 17, 2022

One Piece: Collection 29 is another thrilling set of Straw Hat Pirate adventures. The series is broadcast on Cartoon Network in North America. Licensed by Funimation Entertainment, One Piece is a vibrant anime series with one of the best cast of characters in anime history. The series is based on the manga created by Eiichiro Oda. The anime features animation produced by Toei Animation. Collection 29 includes episodes 694-719.

The journey is all the more entertaining because of the cast of characters: Monkey D. Luffy (Mayumi Tanaka), Nami (Akemi Okamura), Tony Tony Chopper (Ikue Ōtani), Usopp (Kappei Yamaguchi), Franky (Kazuki Yao), Sanji (Hiroaki Hirata), Brook (Yūichi Nagashima), Roronoa Zoro (Kazuya Nakai), Miss Wednesday (Misa Watanabe), and Nico Robin (Yuriko Yamaguchi) are set for more adventures. The series revolves around the explorations of the Straw Hat Pirates and the unique journeys the heroes undertake.

An ongoing battle ensues between Doflamingo and the Straw Hat Pirates. The epic battle unfolds in a birdcage. As the targets face a series of new challenges, the Straw Hat Pirates are challenged in ways never before tested. Luffy is joined by Law as the pair fights to the front- and-center of the arena.

As Luffy and Law take on Doflamingo, Law reveals a secret identity and the hidden truths of Corazon begin to unfold. Sabo and Fujitora continue their own battle and the stakes between them continue to build. Meanwhile, Zoro attacks Pica in an all-out fight-to-the-finish-line. With new dangers from Doflamingo, can Luffy and the other Straw Hat Pirates overcome the obstacles set before them?

The supporting cast of characters is one of the reasons One Piece manages to be such a thrilling anime production. Nami is one of the best supporting players – her sense of energetic charm and unending determination to succeed – is key to her character growth throughout the program. Zoro is another exceptional supporting player, providing the storytelling universe with some outstanding energy. Chopper remains a personal favorite: a cute and cuddly supporting player – as a little reindeer.

Time to duel.

The animation continues to showcase the wonderful world of One Piece. The animation direction by Kazuya Hisada (Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT) is top-notch. One Piece is one of the best efforts Hisada has ever been involved with and the production benefits from their involvement: this is an enormously evocative animated world and everything from the background artwork to the line art impresses.

The original character designs by Eiichiro Oda are outstanding. Adapted by Kazuya Hisada, the anime series character designs are excellent. Each of the central protagonists has a unique aesthetic which is well-suited to their respective personalities. Luffy remains the most distinctive of all – with his cool elasticity making a big impression. (Luffy gives Mr. Fantastic a run for the money.)

The score composed by Shiroh Hamaguchi (Final Fantasy: Unlimited, Ah! My Goddess) and Kōhei Tanaka (Angelic Layer, Desert Punk) is exceptional. There are few anime productions with such an entertaining score. The music provides an unending sense of energy throughout. The music has an entertaining aura which is impossible to miss. The music builds and crescendos with energy when necessary and mellows when character-moments occur. A first-rate effort by Hamaguchi and Tanaka.

The action sequences continue to deliver and impress in spades. One Piece is one of the best action series ever made. Collection 29 continues to demonstrate how energetic and engaging the action sequences can be. The stage is set for even more intense battles. Who will emerge victorious?

Written by Hirohiko Uesaka (One Piece Film Strong World, One Piece Episode of Sabo), One Piece continues to adapt the manga by Eiichiro Oda in good measure. The scripts are entertaining and give plenty of moments to each respective character on the series. The action is also well balanced within the framework of the story. A strong effort.

Directed by Toshinori Fukazawa (Digimon: Data Squad, Zatch Bell), One Piece is one of the best anime series ever made. The production has an abundance of creativity, energy, and vitality. A breathtaking example of the power of the anime medium. Fukazawa showcases the world of Oda beautifully. One Piece is the biggest anime series worldwide with good reason: it is a powerhouse production.
