Luffy is without-a-doubt one of the best central protagonists in anime history. It is no wonder that One Piece transcends mediums and has been so successful in manga, anime, video-games, motion-pictures, and other entertainment forms: Luffy is one of the best protagonists around. The character has a vibrant sense of enthusiasm that carries throughout the entire program. Luffy won't just sit back and allow villains to win. Instead, Luffy fights for what is right (despite all odds) and showcases his strong enthusiasm for adventure. (Luffy always has a big appetite, too.)
The animation is remarkable. One Piece is one of the best animated series in television history (anime or otherwise). The animation direction by Kazuya Hisada (Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT) showcases the wonderful world created by Eiichiro Oda. The art work has exquisite detail and the production excels at demonstrating the vast landscapes of the storytelling universe. The character designs by Kazuya Hisada, adapting the work of Oda, are also top-notch.
The score composed by Kōhei Tanaka (Angelic Layer, Desert Punk) and Shiroh Hamaguchi (Final Fantasy: Unlimited, Ah! My Goddess) is one of the most entertaining elements of the production. Engaging from start-to-finish, One Piece has an absorbing score with plenty of energy to keep audiences entertained. The music manages to swell with energy during each battle scene. The compositions also showcase emotional gravitas during the more complex sequences of the series.
The scripts by Hirohiko Uesaka (One Piece Film Strong World, One Piece Episode of Sabo ) are fun and charming. Uesaka does an exceptional job of adapting the original manga. The anime universe mesmerizes with charming character-moments and edge-of-your-seat battle sequences. The 28th collection continues to showcase why One Piece is one of the most popular anime series of all time.
Directed by Hiroaki Miyamoto (One Piece: Film Gold) and Toshinori Fukazawa (Digimon: Data Squad, Zatch Bell), the 28th collection of One Piece showcases the efforts of both filmmakers. The series has a consistent directorial style and fans will be pleased with how entertaining the production continues to be. One Piece delivers the goods in spades – action, adventure, comedy, and spectacle.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Funimation Entertainment, One Piece: Collection 28 is presented in 1080i/1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The series transitions from interlaced to progressive. The presentation looks strong and there is a sense of excellent color reproduction on the series.
One Piece is a vibrant looking production and it is a wonderful series to experience in native high-definition. The layouts and character designs are showcased well on the release. The action scenes are given ample life with encoding that capably presents the high-octane energy of the production.
The release includes a selection of audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 2.0 and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles). The high- resolution audio is fantastic and engaging. Crisp, engaging, and dynamic. Dialogue is easy to understand. The music score is well integrated in to the soundstage. The sound effects are well balanced within a stereo audio sound mix. A solid effort by Funimation.
One Piece: Lightning Round with the Straw Hats (HD, 13:13)
Textless Opening Song "Wake Up!" (HD, 2:32)
Textless Opening Song "Hard Knock Days" (HD, 2:32)
One Piece: Collection 28 continues to prove why the series became the biggest anime series of all time. The animation is outstanding, the action sequences are thrilling, and the characters are charming. The production shines in all the right ways. The 28th collection of the series continues to provide fans with a native high-definition presentation. The supplemental package is on the lighter side but there remains a exclusive featurette. One Piece fans won't be able to resist. Highly recommended.
