Ocean's Trilogy Collection Blu-ray Movie Review

The Same Three Dozen

Warner previously issued the Steven Soderbergh-directed Ocean's Trilogy on Blu-ray in 2007. At the time, that set was the only way to get all three discs on Blu, although each has since become available individually. For some unspecified occasion (as if they need an excuse), Warner is reissuing the same discs in a new Ocean's Trilogy Collection with a fourth disc of new extras and a box of additional swag. Since the discs are reissues of those previously released, they need not be reviewed anew. This review will provide a brief overview of the new extras.

Ocean's Trilogy Collection Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

Each film is accompanied by its own supplements, described in Martin Liebman's trilogy review.

The new Trilogy Collection adds a fourth, bonus disc that has only one audio option (English) but offers a choice of subtitles in English SDH, German SDH, Italian, Spanish (Latin), Spanish (Castillian) and Portuguese. The following new features are included.

• Are You In or Out?: The Making of Ocean's Eleven (1080i; 1.78:1; 28:10): This 2013 documentary combines contemporary interviews and vintage clips from 2001 to review the making of the first Ocean's film, including the rapid assembly of the cast and the securing of the Bellagio resort and casino as magnificent set and backdrop. Director Steven Soderbergh, producer Jerry Weintraub, numerous crew members and most of the cast contribute their thoughts.



• Ready, Jet Set, Go: The Making of Ocean's Twelve (1080i; 1.78:1; 25:39): In much the same format as the previous documentary, and featuring many of the same participants (but with the prominent addition of screenwriter George Nolfi and new cast member Catherine Zeta-Jones), this documentary looks at the European junket that formed the core of the first Ocean's sequel. One gets the sense of a not-so-hidden agenda to respond to the frequent criticism that the cast and crew were so busy having a good time that they forgot to make a good movie.



• Third's a Charm: The Making of Ocean's Thirteen (1080i; 1.78:1; 29:46): In this final "making of" documentary, screenwriters Brian Koppelman and David Levien are major participants, as they discuss creating a fitting conclusion to the Ocean's saga. Newcomers Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin are also interviewed. Unlike the first film, Thirteen was set in an imaginary casino constructed at great expense on a Hollywood soundstage; production designer Philip Messina describes the design philosophy.



• Pros and Cons: Inside Ocean's Outfit (1080i; 1.78:1; 13:02): A portrait of the original eleven members of the Ocean's crew, with comments from the cast and director, and also from crime novelist Gary Phillips.



• Ahab with a Piggyback: The Means & Machines of Ocean's (1080i; 1.78:1; 9:03): A look at the technology, high and low, employed in the various heists.



• The Style of Steal (1080i; 1.78:1; 10:49): An attempt to describe the essence of the Ocean's films and why they remain popular.



• Original Ocean's, Original Cool (1080i; 1.78:1; 13:50): A retrospective account of the original Rat Pack and the first Ocean's 11.

Besides the bonus disc, the Trilogy Collection includes a deck of logo-bearing playing cards and a set of dice on which the one spots have been replaced with the words "Ocean's Trilogy Collection".

Ocean's Trilogy Collection Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Fans who were hoping for remasters of the Ocean's films, preferably with lossless audio, will be understandably disappointed that this new collection contains the same discs previously released. The new bonus disc, while entertaining, is hardly enough on its own to justify an upgrade. For those who don't already own these films, however, the Ocean's Trilogy Collection is the obvious choice.
