North Sea is Death Sea Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Svet Atanasov August 16, 2026

Hark Bohm's "North Sea is Death Sea" (1976) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Severin Films. The supplemental features on the release include video introduction by filmmaker Fatih Akin; recent program with Hark Bohm; recent program with actor Dschingis Bowakow; promotional trailer; and more. In German, with optional English subtitles for the main feature. Region-A "locked".

Paul Brickman’s film Risky Business is remembered for various reasons. One of them is a famous scene that produces the following line: “Sometimes you gotta say, ‘What the fuck’, make your move”. The line is uttered by Joel Goodson’s best friend, Miles, who moments later clarifies its meaning. “Every now and then, say 'What the fuck?' ‘What the fuck’ gives you freedom. Freedom brings opportunity. Opportunity makes your future."

Even though Hark Bohm’s film North Sea is Death Sea was released seven years earlier on the other side of the Atlantic, it is essentially one big cinematic fugue based on Miles’ line. This is why in Germany those who saw North Sea is Death Sea as teenagers, like Jorg Buttgereit and Fatih Akin, describe it as a minor classic that left an indelible mark on them. Without using colorful lines, North Sea is Death Sea spoke the truth to them, and they heard it loud and clear.

On the outskirts of Hamburg, in one of the city’s poorest suburbs, teenagers Uwe (Uwe Bohm) and Dschingis (Dschingis Bowakow) are growing up in dysfunctional, permanently broken families. Uwe’s father is an unemployed, violent alcoholic who rarely misses an opportunity to beat him up and his mother. Dschingis does not have a father. He lives with his overworked and underpaid mother, an Asian immigrant, who sticks out like a sore thumb. Uwe and Dschingis occasionally meet in the vast areas around the cheap apartment buildings where all teenagers gather to play, but could not be any further apart. Uwe is the leader of a small gang of troublemakers, while Dschingis is a loner who spends all of his free time secretly building a small boat.

Following yet another painful beating at home, Uwe, surrounded by his friends and while letting off steam, damages Dschingis’ boat. However, shortly after, during an inevitable violent brawl, Uwe is defeated by Dschingis and forced to help rebuild the damaged boat. While reluctantly working as a team, the two boys then quickly realize that their lives are overwhelmed by the same misery and agree to break free of it by maneuvering the boat through the city’s canals and heading to the deadly North Sea.

As in Risky Business, the small, simple story is a ruse. North Sea is Death Sea is a messenger that telegraphs a big, timeless truth: freedom is discovered by those willing to take risks and step into the unknown. The two boys pick the wrong path to it, but this does not change the significance of their discovery. The alternative is more of the predictable misery that is slowly redirecting them onto another wrong path, at the end of which lies an entirely predictable catastrophe. (This is the very reason the two, while on the run from the police, accidentally discover the juvenile detention center, where other, older troublemakers have already permanently ruined their lives).

The final act could have been significantly better. Instead of wrapping up North Sea is Death Sea with an ambiguous finale, Bohm should have allowed Uwe and Dschingis to perish into the dangerous waters as the sun goes down.

Bohm’s director of photography was Wolfgang Treu, who lensed several episodes of Wolfgang Petersen’s acclaimed TV mini-series Das Boot.

North Sea is Death Sea Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, North Sea is Death Sea arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Severin Films.

The release presents a recent 4K restoration of North Sea is Death Sea, prepared on behalf of Kinemathek Hamburg, which apparently was also used to deliver a 2K DCP. The 4K restoration was sourced from the original 35mm camera negative.

I do not have previous experience with North Sea is Death Sea, so I can only comment on the quality of the visuals that I saw on my system. All of them have a stable organic appearance. I would describe delineation, clarity, and depth as very good. Some density fluctuations are unmissable, but they appear to be inherited. I did not encounter any distracting anomalies introduced by poor digital corrections. I liked the color scheme. In a few places, select visuals became a tad too warm, but there are no massive blunders. As a result, I think it is fair to declare that North Sea is Death Sea has a pleasing period appearance. Image stability is excellent.

North Sea is Death Sea Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

There are two standard audio tracks on this Blu-ray release: German DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and German DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English subtitles are provided for the main feature.

The 5.1 track is an upmix that was created during the 4K restoration of North Sea is Death Sea. I decided to view the 4K restoration with it and was not disappointed. While it does not dramatically expand the dynamic field, it definitely helps several areas, most in the second half, sound quite good. All exchanges are very clear, sharp, and easy to follow. The English translation is excellent.

North Sea is Death Sea Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

One way or another, those who desire freedom must pay a price for it. Virtually all adults know this. When do teenagers discover this timeless truth? Some do very early, because they come from broken families whose struggles to coexist with everyone else quickly make the obvious too obvious. What happens after that, however, is even more important. Choosing the wrong path to freedom and taking the wrong risks along the way can just as quickly reveal another, very different timeless truth. North Sea is Death Sea is about two teenagers from a poor suburb of Hamburg choosing their path to freedom. It is a small but good film, a genuine time capsule that is rightfully considered a minor classic in Germany. Severin Films' release presents a recent, quite good 4K restoration of it. RECOMMENDED.
