No Time For Love is an entertaining romantic-comedy classic based on the story by Robert Lees and Frederic I. Rinaldo. The classic gem stars one of Hollywood's most beloved cinematic pairings: Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray. Worth a watch for cinema enthusiasts.
Katherine Grant (Claudette Colbert) is a fashion photographer working for a major publication. Determined to add a sense of artistic flair to her photographs, Katherine decides to be creative behind-the-scenes while taking photographs of construction workers involved in a tunnel project, including hunk Jim Ryan (Fred MacMurray). As Jim and Katherine begin to spend time together, sparks fly – is love in the air?
The performances make No Time For Love even more entertaining. Claudette Colbert is superb as fashion photographer Katherine Grant. Colbert gives her performance a sense of creative vitality: carrying the film on her shoulders. Fred MacMurray is also impressive in his supporting part as construction worker Jim. MacMurray's performance is not quite as nuanced as Colbert's but he provides the film with charm as well.
The cinematography by Charles Lang (Charade, Some Like It Hot) is top-notch. No Time For Love is wonderful looking and the lush black-and-white visuals help the filmmaking excel from beginning to end. There is something magical about classic black-and-white cinema – and film gems like this one make that as clear as day. Superb.
The art direction by Hans Dreier (Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend) and Robert Usher (Hold Back the Dawn, The Jungle Princess) provides No Time For Love with impressive production merits. The construction site sequences are well developed. As water rushes in to the site, the art direction makes a “splash” and impresses in spades. A job well done.
A dash of love.
The music score composed by Victor Young (The Quiet Man, Around the World in 80 Days ) is quite charming too. The score imbues the characters with a sense of whimsy. The storyline is far more entertaining with the solid music backdrop enhancing the production. Kudos to Young.
One of the most essential components of the production was the top-notch costumes. Designed by Edith Head (The Sting, Roman Holiday), No Time For Love has great attire for the entire cast. A wonderful sense of detail was given to each character – and the results are exceptional.
Alma Macrorie (The Emperor Waltz, The Trouble with Harry) capably edited No Time For Love and made the production all the more charming. There is never a sense of the film feeling over-long and over- cooked. The pace and rhythm flows nicely. Macrorie helped tell the story well.
The screenplay by Claude Binyon (My Blue Heaven, Holiday Inn) is a highlight. No Time For Love certainly has a more feminist-driven script for the time-period and there were a lot of elements that made a strong impression. The emphasis on a strong lead female character (driven by her passionate ambitions over directions expected by her career-path) was nice to see in a Hollywood classic of this era. No Time For Love certainly had a standout screenplay.
Produced and directed by Mitchell Leisen (Death Takes a Holiday, Remember the Night ), No Time For Love is well worth watching. The production has great merits. The direction helps carry the filmmaking to a fun and satisfying conclusion. Leisen helped bring out the best of the cast: working well alongside Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray. A classic with a lot to offer audiences.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber, No Time For Love is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.37:1 full frame. The print is exceptional. The black levels are superb throughout the presentation. The print has few issues: this is certainly a clean presentation with little to no print damage visible. There are no issues with telecine wobble or significant damage. The black-and-white cinematography shines with this high-definition scan.
The release is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio mono. The release has a strong audio presentation that works well from beginning to end. Dialogue is crisp, clear, and easy to understand. There are no significant issues to report. No egregious hiss, crackle, warps, pops, clicks, and other audio-related detriments.
Optional English subtitles are provided.
