Night After Night is an entertaining pre-code classic based on the story “Single Night” by Louis Bromfield. Produced by William LeBaron (The General Died at Dawn, Lovin' the Ladies), the filmmaking impresses with an eclectic cast including Mae West, George Raft, Alison Skipworth, and Constance Cummings.
Joe Anton (George Raft) is a former boxer who wishes to put his past behind him and move on. Joe brings Miss Mabel (Alison Skipworth) and Miss Jerry Healy (Constance Cummings) to his new speakeasy night club. To Joe's surprise, ex-flame Maudie Triplett (Mae West) is in attendance (providing both Miss Mabel and Miss Healy will all the sordid details on his past). A strange, unforgettable, and unique night unfolds.
The performances from the cast help to make Night After Night a success. The ensemble does a strong job together and each performer brings something unique to the table. In a supporting role, Mae West delivers a solid performance that is every-bit as essential to the film as the leading actors. George Raft and Constance Cummings are especially noteworthy for their performances.
Time to shine.
The production also features superb costumes by Travis Banton (The Paradine Case, Shanghai Express) and Walter Plunkett (Singin' in the Rain, An American in Paris). With the costumes showcasing a night club speakeasy, the design efforts by Banton and Plunkett are superb. A outstanding, creative, and engaging effort by the designers.
The cinematography by Ernest Haller (Rebel Without a Cause, Gone With the Wind) is one of the best elements of the production. The black-and-white visuals help to tell the story. A solid effort by Haller.
The screenplay by Vincent Lawrence (Playboy of Paris, Good Dame), Joseph L. Mankiewicz (A Letter to Three Wives, All About Eve), and Mae West (Goin' to Town, Every Day's a Holiday) helps to tell the story in a compelling way. The script is fun and charming. The dialogue is well-done as well. There is certainly much to appreciate here.
Directed by Archie Mayo (Vengeance, The Petrified Forest), Night After Night is a fun and delightful cinematic experience. Mayo does an excellent job in the directing chair and brings forth quality that impresses from the production team and cast of actors. Fans of classic films will certainly want to check it out (especially for the contribution by Mae West).
Arriving on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber, Night After Night is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame. The release has a reasonably strong encode and the print quality is worthwhile as well. Black levels are reasonable and the print is generally clear throughout. The scan had no significant print damage to report.
The release is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio mono. The lossless audio track on the release is crisp throughout. Dialogue was clear and easy to understand. The music soundtrack was also well preserved. There were no significant issues to report in regards to hiss, crackle, warps, pops, or clicks.

The production has outstanding merits and a strong screenplay written by Vincent Lawrence (Playboy of Paris, Good Dame), Joseph L. Mankiewicz (A Letter to Three Wives, All About Eve), and Mae West (Goin' to Town, Every Day's a Holiday). The Blu-ray presentation is worthwhile. Fans will want to pick it up. Highly recommended.
