New Rose Hotel Blu-ray Movie Review

Radiance Films is giving Region B enthusiasts a chance to check in to the title facility, though given some of the approbation aimed at New Rose Hotel, some which may have suggested there was a big "vacancy" sign flashing subliminally with regard to the screenplay, that might be a risky gambit. New Rose Hotel had a previous 1080 release in Region A courtesy of Cinématographe, and judging by screenshots (another risky gambit), this release looks decidedly similar.

New Rose Hotel Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

New Rose Hotel is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Radiance Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.85:1. Radiance sent a check disc for purposes of this review, and so I'm not privy to any information on the transfer contained in an insert booklet (which is frankly often pretty generic with Radiance). Their website states this is a "2K restoration from the 35mm interpositive by Vinegar Syndrome, approved by Abel Ferrara". IPs have become increasingly rare in these "spoiled children" days of transfers based off of original negatives, and there is probably a less consistent viewing experience here in terms of clarity in particular, which is of varying quality anyway due to a number of "arty" interstitials that offer things like closed circuit video and the like. The most impressive thing about this transfer is its pretty luscious palette, which includes some floridly lit, almost Bava- esque at times, scenes slathered in reds and blues. In comparing screenshots between this release and the Region A release, I really wasn't able to spot any major differences.

As with the video side of things, based on Brian's description of the Region A track, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on this disc sounds identical. This is not an incredibly immersive surround track, with the bulk of the sonic information anchored in the front channels, but occasionally some ambient environmental background effects, like the lap of water in a pool sequence, can engage the rear and side channels. Scoring also is intermittently spacious. Dialogue is presented without any issues.

New Rose Hotel Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Author William Gibson has had a pretty tough time of it with regard to cinematic adaptations of his frequently challenging work, but it may have been a fool's errand to even attempt an adaptation of the source (very) short story in this instance. This is a film reeking of self indulgent excesses ranging from the writing to performances to direction. Fans of the cast may find this to be of a certain "train wreck" allure, but I doubt even diehard aficionados of the marquee stars would consider this a showcase of any sort. Technical merits are generally solid, and the supplements, only one of which is ported over from the Region A release, are enjoyable, for anyone who may be considering making a purchase.
