National Lampoon's Animal House 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 19, 2021

Universal and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for Director John Landis' 1978 fan favorite Comedy 'Animal House.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Universal brings Animal House to UHD SteelBook with a nice feeling matte exterior. Front panel artwork is fun. It's essentially a Delta House portrait with all of the fraternity brothers gathered outside in front of the dilapidated structure. All of the characters are here, most of them just facing forward, but there are some antics to be found scattered about. The film's title appears center and just above the midline. "National Lampoon's" is in yellow and "Animal House" in playfully larger red letters outlined in yellow. The rear panel depicts a nighttime shot of the statue honoring the Faber College founder, Emil Faber, filling most of the vertical frame. A wet quad sidewalk area and an illuminated campus building appear behind him. A small Universal logo and legalese can be found bottom left and a model number bottom right. The spine is a flat white color with the film's title, as it appears on the front, filling much of the length. A Universal logo has been placed at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a photo collage of stills from the film depicting several memorable scenes and favorite characters in action.

National Lampoon's Animal House 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Universal has done well with Animal House's SteelBook presentation. The front photo is loads of fun and the back panel offers a contrast to the "higher learning" end of the college experience spectrum (even if its humorously tongue-in-cheek itself). The inner panel could have been a bit more inventive but few SteelBooks are subjectively perfect. However, the film looks amazing on UHD and this SteelBook packaging variant comes very highly recommended.
