Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Neil Lumbard February 5, 2025Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 continues the action-packed fan-favorite. From creator Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 includes more thrills with episodes 111-137. Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 comes from producers Fukashi Azuma (Shaman King, Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok) and Tomoko Gushima (Saiyuki: Requiem, The Prince of Tennis). The die-hard fanbase can expect a lot more action-comedy fun. Featuring voice-performances by a cast that includes Junko Takeuchi, Kazuhiko Inoue, Masaki Terasoma, Chie Nakamura, Takaya Hashi, and Noriaki Sugiyama.
Action and adventure always await Naruto (Junko Takeuchi) as the role of the ninja is one full of mystery and suspense. The stakes are high as Naruto has new adventures awaiting him – even if Naruto’s ninja moves allow him to quadruple and multiply. Meanwhile, Sasuke is on a new mission and one that takes up his time.
Sasuke is determined to assemble a special force of ninja warriors – a team comprised exclusively of the strongest and most capable Shinobi. As the team builds their alliances and works to perfect their game-plan, the Shinobi finds themselves tested to their limits. Who can survive and live to join the epic team? The Akatsuki Deidara poses a real challenge to the Shinobi team. Fight to the death or live to talk about it.
As old alliances and enemies are both put to the test, Naruto and friends find themselves facing more challenges than ever expected. The journey is far from over. Yahiko even goes up against his former instructor Jiraiya at the Hidden Rain Village. Who will walk away the hero? The balance of student-instructor is put to the test.
Naruto is one of the biggest anime series of all time. Some of this popularity is due to the beloved cast of characters at the forefront. Naruto leads the way as one of the most charming and high-energy heroes in anime. The character is bursting with energy and enthusiasm for martial arts and his role as a hero helping others is essential. A ninja with incredible skills (including the ability to multiply himself) the character is a big part of the anime legacy. Growing up as a kid with my nose in the manga, its no wonder Naruto continues to be such a popular franchise.

Naruto features top-notch character design elements by Tetsuya Nishio (Naruto Shippūden: The Lost Tower, The Last: Naruto The Movie) and Hirofumi Suzuki (Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie, Naruto Shippūden: The Lost Tower). The character designs are superb. From the manga to the anime, the designs add so much joy to the production. The characters spring to life with compelling style. An incredible vibe for the fandom to enjoy.
One of the essential ingredients: the top-notch animation. Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 continues the animated journey with quality animation. The craft of the animation is a series highlight. With art direction by Norihiko Yokomatsu (Call of the Night, Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie) and Shigenori Takada (Yu Yu Hakusho, Tokyo Mew Mew), Naruto continues to showcase the talent of the animators involved with the series production. The animation style is one of the key components of the entire production. The ninja atmosphere and action are highlighted well by the team of animators. The end result is a series that has earned its place as a classic.
Atsuho Matsumoto (Emma: A Victorian Romance) provides the cinematography. The cinematography is a highlight of the series. The visuals are emphasized well by Matsumoto. There is plenty to appreciate with regards to the aesthetic style on the series.
Naruto Shippuden provides entertaining music composed by -yaiba- (Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie) and Yasuharu Takanashi (Tokyo Mew Mew New, Fairy Tail) – the fun score adds to the energetic wonderment of the production. The anime finds a nice balance between ninja action and heartfelt emotion. The music is a big part of the essence of the anime series. The composers understand the essence of the ninja journey.
Junki Takegami (Pokémon: Black and White, Beast Fighter - The Apocalypse) pens the Naruto Shippuden script and brings a good sensibility to the action storytelling as a writer. The series is a fun adventure and fans of energetic anime series with an emphasis on characters and action-driven storytelling will find something about it worth appreciating.
Directed by Hayato Date (Convenience Store Boy Friends, Tokyo Underground), Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 continues to reward longtime fans with more of the staple adventure and Shonen action fans have become accustomed to experiencing over the years and seasons of the series. The journey is the heart of the series and not the ultimate destination point. Despite some filler and the series not always being a slam-dunk, Naruto Shippuden remains an entertaining classic. Fans who are current with the anime will be thrilled to dive back in with more exciting episodes.
Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

Released on Blu-ray by VIZ Media, Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The series has received a high-definition upscale. The high-definition video has been processed from standard-definition DVD quality video.
As a result, it is worth reminding viewers that the anime series was not produced in native high-definition and these episodes are not going to ever look as crisp or pristine as a native high-definition presentation could muster for viewers. The upscaling process isn't as it could be. The presentation often suffers from jaggies and edge processing. The soft and compressed looking visuals don't provide a crisp or refined image.
The color reproduction is muted looking and not as robust as ideal, either. The transfer may provide a modest-at-best boost to the compression methods on DVD, but other than that, the standard-definition video isn't going to cause anyone to be impressed too much. The presentation is a far cry from the best anime presentations. There are a lot of issues with the presentation and VIZ did not rectify all of them with the upscale. It is obvious some of these issues will never be perfectly resolved. It is unfortunate.
Naruto Shippuden was produced in a different era – the era between the native film-based anime of the 90s and earlier and the modern high-definition anime of today (produced digitally). There is nothing fans can do about it. The source-resolution is inherently limited by the encoding and compression methods used by computers and editing processes of the era – with no "re-do" from the ground-up possible.
Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (with English subtitles). The lossless audio fares a little bit better compared to the video-quality. Nonetheless, it is still not a total slam-dunk.
The audio sounds decent enough on the release. The soundstage and detail are average at best. Dialogue is clear and well reproduced. Sound effects are well integrated into the sound mix. The music is reasonably well reproduced. Even so, audio sounds less robust than modern productions. The English subtitles are well-done and free from having egregious spelling or grammatical errors.
Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

Naruto Shippuden: Set 5 is going to please fans who are continuing the epic journey of the Shonen anime. Fans will want to pick up where they left off and continue the series adventure. The Blu-ray release provides a upscaled from standard-definition presentation and the source- material quality is inherently limited.
The set includes a slipcover on the first print run. The set also provides a small selection of extras. Fans who want ownership of Naruto Shippuden will be tempted to make a purchase.
