Mystics in Bali Blu-ray Movie Review

The witch

Every single Blu-ray and DVD release from Mondo Macabro’s catalog that I have added to my library has a promo piece lasting approximately a minute. The promo piece appears immediately after the disc loads and uses a very funky music motif. Somewhere in this music motif, a deranged laugh adds an exotic flavor that perfectly matches the tone and attitude of just about every film Mondo Macabro has distributed over the years.

The deranged laugh can be heard multiple times in H. Tjut Djalil’s Mystics in Bali, a seriously unhinged black comedy that seems to want to be several other things, too. I do not believe that it is modified in any way. If I am right, the deranged laugh is rather special because it makes the owner of the voice that produces it the undisputed star of Mystics in Bail.

The chosen star of Mystics in Bail, however, is different. It is a beautiful young woman named Cathy (Ilona Agathe Bastian) who has arrived in Indonesia to learn about the most powerful kind of black magic. While being courted by a local hunk (Yos Santo), Cathy figures out where to meet a wicked old witch (Sofia W.D.), supposedly the ultimate authority on this most powerful kind of black magic, and, at the right time, the two connect. However, while showering the witch with compliments and learning about the witch’s skills, Cathy lowers her guard, and her teacher takes control of her body. Shortly after, Cathy is transformed into a vicious vampire, whose head routinely detaches itself from the possessed body to go on various killing sprees.

The deranged laugh can be heard in several sequences, where the witch goes berserk and plays with Cathy’s mind and body. These sequences are the reason to seek and see Mystics in Bail because they produce the only genuinely exciting material. The finale features decent fireworks, too, but at this point, the creators of Mystics in Bali simply offer more of the same. In other words, the climax is rather underwhelming.

Unfortunately, all of the material where the witch isn’t witching is quite poor. For example, Bastian, a non-professional actress, routinely looks very stiff, while Santo easily creates the impression that he is improvising as best as he can. Unsurprisingly, there is zero chemistry between the two. In the final act, multiple secondary characters engage in activities that are used in classic filler material as well.

The other crucial weakness of Mystics in Bali is the quality of its dialogue. The original Indonesian and English tracks that Mystics in Bali is presented with both utilize a mish-mash of mostly random bad lines, making it impossible to establish a coherent identity. Indeed, some of these lines are appropriately goofy, but there are plenty that would be suitable for a dramatically more rational horror thriller.

Mondo Macabro's Blu-ray release presents two versions of Mystics in Bali: an original Theatrical Version, which is approximately 86 minutes long, and an Extended Cut, which is approximately 118 minutes long. The latter incorporates inserts sourced from a standard definition master.

Presented in an aspect ratio of 2.34:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Mystics in Bali arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Mondo Macabro.

Mondo Macabro's Blu-ray release presents two versions of Mystics in Bali: an original Theatrical Version, which is approximately 86 minutes long, and an Extended Cut, which is approximately 118 minutes long. The latter incorporates inserts sourced from a standard definition master.

I viewed the Theatrical Version, which was recently restored, in its entirety, and thought that it looked wonderful. To be honest, I was quite surprised by the quality of the presentation because I have previous experience with Mystics in Bali on DVD, where the standard definition presentation of it has quite a few very uneven areas. Now, the only bits of the Theatrical Version that look uneven are the ones with the special effects. Everywhere else, delineation, clarity, and depth range from very good to excellent. Also, color reproduction and balance are terrific. As a result, the Theatrical Version has a very convincing period appearance. I did not encounter any encoding anomalies to report in our review. My score is 4.75/5.00. (Note: This is a Region-Free Blu-ray release. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your player regardless of your geographical location).

Mystics in Bali Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

There are two standard audio tracks on this Blu-ray release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Indonesian DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English subtitles are provided for the latter. When turned on, they split the image frame and the black bar below it.

Both tracks have very obvious, unmissable limitations. I prefer the English track because most of the bad overdubbing makes the film slightly more entertaining. However, ultimately, the two tracks are equally average. This is not surprising because even the action material isn't mixed to impress.

Mystics in Bali Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Countless Italian, Spanish, and French genre films do everything Mystics in Bali does to impress dramatically better. It is why Mystics in Bali looks very amateurish. However, in the 1980s, these European films were virtually impossible to see in Indonesia, which is why Mystics in Bali became a huge hit there. I find some of its most outrageous material mildly amusing, but the Theatrical Version, which is the one I prefer, is an undeniably weak genre film. Mondo Macabro's Blu-ray release presents a very good recent restoration of the Theatrical version, as well as a reconstructed Extended Cut. RECOMMENDED to the fans.
