My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is a charming romantic-comedy drama with compelling elements for fans of the genre. Produced by Hajime Maruyama (Demon King Daimao), Junichiro Tanaka (The Demon Girl Next Door), Kentarō Hattori (A Certain Scientific Accelerator), and Kozue Kananiwa (Blue Exorcist, Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl), My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is a series with plenty to offer. Based on the light novel by Wataru Watari and featuring original character designs by Ponkan8, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is a charming delight for romance fans. The series animation by Brain's Base (Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up, Kamisama Dolls) also rewards. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU finds its origins with the series beginning (before the finale continuation).
Hachiman Hikigaya (Takuya Eguchi) hates high school with a passion and has no interest in any social clubs. Yet somehow Hachiman finds himself being convinced to join the “Services Club” by Yukino Yukinoshita (Saori Hayami). Despite a lack of friends or a social life, Hachiman finds himself in the company of those in the services club. Yukino feels everyone is her inferior and she is the ultimate leader of the club.
Can Hachiman survive the club without an inferiority complex? Perhaps. A cute and bubbly girl named Yui Yuigahama (Nao Tōyama) also joins the eccentric club – she even bakes fresh cookies! Perhaps the club isn’t so bad after all. New romance and fun is in store for Hachiman. Maybe even a future kiss is possible, too. A romantic SNAFU ensues!
Behind the success of the series is the cast of characters. The cast provides the anime with the right balance of comedy, drama, and romance. The central leads manage to imbue the perfect elements necessary for a hit series. Hachiman is a fun protagonist and audiences will find the character to be undeniably compelling. The same can be said for Yukino and Yui. Though the personalities of these girls differs, the audience will find the balance between these personalities compelling.
The series animation is a highlight. The animation is crisp and colorful and there are plenty of rewarding moments with exquisite background animation. The series features art direction by Shigemi Ikeda (My Hero Academia, One Punch Man). The animation by Ikeda helps the storytelling to unfold and with plenty of gusto. There is plenty of punch to the art style and it fits the material well.
The character designs by Masaru Shindō (Fruits Basket, Macross Delta) seem distinct and original for the storyline. The characters have creative designs and the efforts by Shindo are outstanding. These designs certainly help to enhance the storytelling and to make the experience all the more rewarding for fans.
The series also benefits from stellar cinematography by Hitoshi Tamura (Midnight Occult Civil Servants, Boarding School Juliet). My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is a wonderful looking production with an outstanding sense of visual flair – the cinematography enhancing the animation and makes the series appear more colorful and vibrant. The lighting is handled well and the cinematography keeps the series engaging.
The original music by Kakeru Ishihama (Concrete Revolutio, Nisekoi - False Love) and monaca (Garo the Animation, Nyaruko: Crawling with Love!) provides plenty of charm to the entire production. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is a series with charming music and the score fits the material well. An impressive effort by Ishihama.
Written by Shōtarō Suga (Darker than Black, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU delivers comedy, drama, and romantic bliss for fans of the genre. A delightfully quirky confection for fans seeking this type of anime production, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is certainly a series with a notable concept and with plenty of ideas. Suga remembers to focus on the characters and their journeys.
Directed by Ai Yoshimura (Dance with Devils, Blue Spring Ride) during season 1 and Kei Oikawa (This Art Club Has a Problem!, Uma Musume Pretty Derby) during season 2, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU explores the storytelling universe with plenty of energy and excitement. The directors of the series manage to balance out the character drama and romance. A solid SNAFU and one that will please viewers who enjoy the genre roots.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The video quality on the release is impressive and manages to showcases the series vibrant colors and line art. Background animation looks stellar as well and the overall encode does a solid job of handling the material.
The release provides a selection of audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo (with English subtitles). The lossless, high resolution audio tracks provide the series with crisp and engaging audio. Dialogue is clear and remains pleasing on the ears – and is never difficult to understand. The score is well reproduced and integrated in to the presentation. Both audio options are provided in 24 bit depth resolution, allowing the dynamics to sound even more clear and impressive on the whole. The English dub track sounds quite good and will please dub enthusiasts. A solid effort by Sentai Filmworks.
