My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree Blu-ray Movie Review

As odd as it may seem that Equestria Girls takes one of the central conceits of My Little Pony — you know, that its heroines are horses — and transforms things so that we’re now dealing with (more or less) human girls, there’s no denying that there’s a sweet appeal to this franchise. Legend of Everfree picks up as a kind of quasi-sequel to My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Friendship Games, an entry which itself followed My Little Pony: Equestria Girls and My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks. With characters and even general plot dynamics now firmly in place in this series, while there’s not much in terms of surprises here, there’s some appealing humor, a couple of supposed mysteries and another amiable song score that will no doubt appeal to younger girls and perhaps a “brony” or two.

The Equestria Girls head off to Camp Everfree for a supposed bout of R & R, but they’re almost immediately subsumed in a mystery that has its roots in some supposed folklore about the place, myths that suggest the grounds are protected by a perhaps vengeful spirit. As in previous Equestria Girls entries, there’s nothing too sinister afoot, and all potential trauma is more or less easily solved by working together and building teamwork. This newest outing is a bit more sharply written than some of its predecessors, with some actually fairly appealing comedy keeping the proceedings relatively lively a lot of the time.

My Little Pony Equestria Girls: The Legend of Evertree is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Shout! Factory with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. This presentation is very much in line with the previous Equestria Girls Blu-rays, with a bright and appealing palette and solid line detail. This particular outing is especially strong in terms of purples and blues, and some of the "magical" elements attributed to the supposed spirit haunting the camp have a suitably sparkly demeanor. While backgrounds can be a little underdeveloped at times, character designs are quite distinctive and add to the series' visual allure.

My Little Pony Equestria Girls: The Legend of Evertree offers a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix that is, like its video counterpart, much in line with previous Equestria Girls releases. The series has had an above average song score and that continues with this release, with some kind of jangly, country-esque tunes cropping up and a generally very well done underscore, both of which spread through the surround channels quite winningly. The mysterious spiritual entity allows for some fun sound effects, and dialogue is represented very cleanly, with good prioritization.

My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

I'm obviously not exactly the target demographic for this release (or at least I hope I'm not), but the fact that I found it as enjoyable as I did perhaps augurs well for those of you who do have the target demographic for this release around your house. As vividly colorful as previous releases in this series, and graced again with some fun musical elements, the "mystery" here may be no great shakes, but the message about friendship and overcoming problems is certainly commendable. Technical merits are strong, and at least for fans this release comes Recommended.
