My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered is an action-adventure fantasy epic. Created by Tsuyoshi Fujitaka, My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered features the original character designs by Chisato Naruse. Yogiri Takatō (Kōki Uchiyama) and Tomochika Dannoura (Miyu Tomita) are surprised to find themselves tossed into a fantasy world where a magic sage hands out special skills and abilities to others who are around them. Unfortunately for Yogiri and Tomochika, these skills are not bestowed on to either of them and everyone else around them seems to be hitting the ground running with more abilities. Determined not to die an instant death and become flaming-hot dragon bait, Tomochika and Yogiri struggle to overcome the new obstacles in front of each other while maneuvering a new world with their fellow classmates. The monsters show up around every corner and the power levels aren’t about to slow-down, either. Can these unskilled heroes find a way to level-up before it is too late? Or perhaps even tap into unexpected abilities neither anticipates?

My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered features solid character designs by Sayuri Sakimoto (Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki OVA, Pastel Memories). The character designs for the anime add to the aesthetic charms of the production. The character art is certainly a compelling part of the anime series. It manages to add to the production quality.

The animation is well-done and is arguably the best part of the production. My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered features art direction by Scott MacDonald (Me and the Alien MuMu, She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man). The animation is something that adds to the energy and scale of the series – the animation providing a wide canvas. The animators provided solid background art and line art for the action and the series has a decent aesthetic that is a notable part of the production.

The cinematography by Yūjirō Yamane (Bodacious Space Pirates, Cutie Honey Universe) is bold and colorful – the robust visuals playing a significant role in the anime. The cinematography is lushly animated. There is something compelling about the bold style of the cinematography. With the cinematographic lensing and eye of Yamane, My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered provides the visual backdrop of a sleek modern anime.

The score composed by Daisuke Kadowaki, Hanae Nakamura (The Quintessential Quintuplets, The Witch and the Beast), Kanade Sakuma (The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses, The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior), and Tatsuhiko Saiki (The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World, The Dawn of the Witch) is a solid part of the production. The composers add decent background music to the action-adventure. The score is a element that is in tune with the genre element and the style of the series.

Written by Jou Aoba (Fairy Ranmaru, King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO), My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered is nothing revolutionary and is more in-line with a typical fantasy-action anime. It nonetheless provides decent dialogue and a familiar but decent concept is executed. A solid if unremarkable effort by Aoba.

Released on Blu-ray by Sentai Filmworks, My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high- definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The presentation is crisp and colorful – the animation a superb part of the encode. The crisp line art and background art is something to behold. The visuals are well reproduced and the cinematography is bright, colorful, and engaging.

One thing about Blu-ray and physical media is that it is more consistent than streaming video. Streaming video has a lot more variables to consider – the bit-rates can fluctuate more due to internet speeds, data plans, hardware, software, the service provider, how many users are connected to the same connection, and other variables – these aspects can all have an impact on the quality of streaming. Physical media is more reliable and one can enjoy it with no digital frustration or internet connection. Should the internet not be accessible for even a day, one can pop on a disc and it is just as reliable as it was the day before. (Not to forget that discs can last for 100+ years – exceeding your own lifetime – if you want a permanent copy to keep).

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (with English subtitles). The release features sound direction by Takatoshi Hamano (Kandagawa Jet Girls, Somali and the Forest Spirit). The lossless audio quality on the release is reasonably solid and engaging. Dialogue is clear and easy to understand. The soundstage adds depth and fidelity to the audio. The score is well reproduced and integrated into the sound presentation. The English subtitles are also well-done and are free from egregious spelling or grammatical errors.

One essential thing regarding Blu-ray is the ability to provide lossless audio encoding. Streaming video services are limited to lossy (non-lossless) audio quality. For enthusiasts who want the best possible presentation quality, Blu-ray provides a distinct advantage. This can mean sound quality improvements to the audio soundstage for audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts. While the difference isn't always night and day (though it can be with the right source), it is nice to know one has a lossless version of the audio presentation.

The Blu-ray release comes in a standard Blu-ray case. The release comes with a standard cover-art (with no reverse sleeve artwork or interior artwork). The discs themselves feature colorful disc artwork. With the package released in a standard Blu-ray case and with no slipcover, one wonders why the release couldn't come in clear case packaging and with a slipcover to add to the "collectable" quality of the package design.

Unfortunately, the release has a mediocre supplemental package. The release comes with almost no supplements (and certainly no supplements of meaningful value). In the streaming age, sometimes supplements make or break the difference between a purchase or pass for some collectors (those especially inclined towards supplements). The release could have been better with making-of documentaries, featurettes, audio commentaries, cast/crew interviews, art galleries, and more.

My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered is a decent action-fantasy anime series and one that might help to entertain Shonen fans looking for something new for their action lineup. The series features colorful animation and nice production values. The Blu-ray release provides a solid high-definition presentation and lossless audio. In an era of streaming services, it is nice to know Blu-ray continues to reward with quality video and audio.

Unfortunately, the supplemental package is nothing special and there isn't much of note on the release to add to the extras section. The package is also average and doesn't include any extra bells and whistles like reversible cover art, a slipcover, booklet, or art cards – the barebones package design just isn't much to write home about. Nonetheless, fans of the My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered anime series may want to consider a purchase for ownership.
