My Hero Academia: Season Two, Part Two Blu-ray Movie Review

My Hero Academia: action that never misses a beat.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard September 16, 2020

One of the most entertaining and action packed anime series, My Hero Academia returns for the second half of season two. The follow-up set is jam-packed with exciting episodes and a thrilling conclusion to the season arc that began on the last set from Funimation. Produced by acclaimed animation company Studio Bones (Wolf's Rain, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood), the series airs on the beloved Cartoon Network action-anime block Toonami. Fans of fast-paced, action-adventure series with a super-heroic spin should consider it to be essential viewing.

The second half of season two explores the journey of Izuku and his pals at the hero academy as they start internships and begin to explore how to use their powers in different ways. As the training goes underway, the students must go through a number of challenges as the teachers push them to their limits. What will happen if the students fail to meet their goals? These young heroes must do their absolute best in order to prove themselves and their worth as heroes! Meanwhile, a ruthless killer attacking and murdering heroes named Stain enters the equation. Will the young heroes survive long enough to take their final exams?

The animation on My Hero Academia is phenomenal and one of the key reasons why audiences are undoubtedly so drawn (pun intended) to the series. The art work is creative, engaging, and stylish. There is something truly magical about how the series was brought to life by the creative team of animators working tirelessly behind-the-scenes. One gets the sense that an enormous amount of creative energy went in to the production of the series and that the artists involved brought their absolute best to the table. I wouldn't have it any other way. Under the guidance of the art directors Shigemi Ikeda (The Promised Neverland, One Punch Man) and Yukiko Maruyama (Overlord, Macross Delta), My Hero Academia is a home-run success in the animation department.

"Time for finals!"

The music score composed by Yuki Hayashi (Run with the Wind, Dive!!) adds to the excitement and energy of each and every episode. There is something exciting about the action-packed themes that composer Hayashi contributes. The characters seem to also have their own themes and the music ties in well with the storytelling. The end result is a score that feels like a treat to experience episode-to- episode.

The storytelling is intense and addictive: one almost can't help but become glued to their seat with anticipation for the next episode. The story by original manga author Kôhei Horikoshi (My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising) and screenwriter Yôsuke Kuroda (Waiting in the Summer) adds excitement and whimsy in equal measure as the characters are well drawn written while still being dramatically tossed into one action-packed scenario after another.

Under the firm chief direction of Kenji Nagasaki (My Hero Academia: Two Heroes), Nagasaki and other directors involved in the series excel at keeping My Hero Academia an example of must-see television. Not only are the action scenes intricate and absorbing, the quieter character moments are heartfelt and charming. There is a sense of real passion in the director's chair. This translates to a better anime series and one which will entertain fans of all ages. My Hero Academia is a truly thrilling anime and one that shouldn't be overlooked.

My Hero Academia: Season Two, Part Two Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Arriving on Blu-ray from Funimation, My Hero Academia: Season 2, Part 2 has received a 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition presentation in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The presentation on the release is top-notch all around and will leave viewers satisfied. The presentation has amazing color reproduction and exceptional clarity. There is an impressive sense of depth to the image. The quality of the presentation helps enhance the viewing experience and is enticing to experience from start to finish. Not only are the colors vibrant and exciting, the style of the series is well rendered from the high-quality encoding. Though there might be a few moments of slight banding, the presentation is generally excellent.

My Hero Academia: Season Two, Part Two Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The release includes two lossless audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and the original Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles). The audio quality is pristine on each of these audio tracks. The clarity and resolution on display adds to the high-quality presentation. There is enveloping surround sound usage on the English track (which is quite fun to listen to with a high quality sound system). Either option provides excellent dialogue reproduction. The music score similarly sounds impressive. The audio packs a pretty solid punch and is a good match to the impressive video presentations.

My Hero Academia: Season Two, Part Two Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

One of the best action anime series of the past decade, My Hero Academia is a must-see mega-hit production. The characters are engaging and memorable (and the action scenes are thrilling enough to put viewers on the edge of their seats). The animation is stellar and the directors never miss a chance to amaze series fans. The second half of season two is another worthwhile installment in the ongoing saga and is well worth checking out. The Blu-ray release features impressive video-audio and enough extras to entertain audiences long after the end-credits have rolled on the last episode in the set. A must own. Highly recommended.
