My Hero Academia: Season Four: Part Two Blu-ray Movie Review

The conclusion to Season 4 of My Hero Academia receives the premium collectors edition treatment.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard March 9, 2021

My Hero Academia Season 4, Part 2 expands on the action-adventure fun that the series has become synonymous with. The series is a fast-paced thrill ride with stunning action scenes which are so thrilling that audiences continue to be glued to their seats. The anime series is adapted from the bestselling manga from creator Kôhei Horikoshi (My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising). The series features animation from beloved animation company, Studio Bones (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood). The action-adventure hit airs on Cartoon Network's Toonami anime block and is distributed by Funimation Entertainment in North America. My Hero Academia: Season 4, Part 2 includes episodes 77 through 88.

While the last set of My Hero Academia set the danger-level to the max, My Hero Academia: Season 4, Part 2 reminds series fans of the school-element of the series: the students are back in class for some new sessions. As the students continue to train to become the best heroes possible, the class soon finds a new mission is in store: the school festival. The lovable cast of characters must come together to perform their best show – and showcase their quirks to the fullest. Meanwhile, unexpected action awaits right around the corner.

The second half of season 4 of My Hero Academia is another total blast which will entertain fans of the long-running anime series. The episodes included in the set are terrific fun and I had a blast watching them. The story arcs were compelling and the series had a nice approach in juggling the action and school elements. It was nice to be reminded of the heroes-in-training story approach after the last collection of episodes was non-stop action. The characters get nice moments to shine. Fans will appreciate the character-beats and the story developments in the second half of Season 4.

A must-own collectors edition for the most die-hard enthusiasts.

One of the best elements of My Hero Academia continues to be the stellar animation. The high quality of art work displayed on the show is superb. The production merits are uniformly high and maintain something consistently impressive. Everything from the character designs to the background art impresses. The visual aesthetic of the series works wonders. It is clear that the team of talented animators involved in the production wanted to bring their A-Game – and the results are stunning.

Season 4 of My Hero Academia was quite a thrill ride. One of the best components of the season was the music score composed by Yuki Hayashi (Here Comes the Morning, Run with the Wind). This is certainly an entertaining score that brings the action to the forefront at every opportunity. The fun music highlights the action beats while never forgetting to craft character themes that are strong. During season 4, composer Hayashi had a lot of fun with the themes and the tone of the series. Everything clicks in to place.

The second-half of My Hero Academia: Season 4 might be a little less action-heavy compared to the first half of the season. Even so, I enjoyed every minute of the thrill ride and the entertainment that flowed throughout the set. The season was a ton of fun and scripts by Yôsuke Kuroda (Honey and Clover) and direction by Kenji Nagasaki (My Hero Academia: Two Heroes) are top notch – truly impressive to behold. The return to more character-themed episodes was nice and the focus on the school training was awesome. The school festival storyline was terrific fun and it is worth the price of admission alone.

My Hero Academia: Season Four: Part Two Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Arriving on Blu-ray from Funimation Entertainment, My Hero Academia: Season 4, Part 2 is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The presentation is superb and manages to present the animation at its best. Throughout the animation, the vibrant and stunning use of colors pops off the screen with an undeniable vibrancy that adds to the viewing experience.

The encode quality is excellent. Detail is impressive and the line art is nice and crisp. There is something remarkable about the way in which the subtle details of the animators are brought to life. The encode has a healthy bit-rate and is free from egregious compression issues. Action scenes look stellar and there are no compression woes to report. Only occasional slight banding can be seen during a few scenes (and mot casual viewers will not be bothered). An excellent transfer for the second half of Season 4.

My Hero Academia: Season Four: Part Two Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5
