My Gift Lvl 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I'm Out for Revenge! - Complete First Season Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard October 19, 2026

My gift LVL 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I'm Out for Revenge! is based on the light novel series by Shisui Meikyou and follows Light, a human adventurer whose weak special ability hides an immense power. After being betrayed by his party, Light begins to unravel the true potential of his Unlimited Gacha and gathers an army of powerful allies to take revenge on those who wronged him. The first season of the anime includes twelve episodes and was produced by J.C. STAFF, directed by Katsushi Sakurabi.

The complete first season of My gift LVL 9999 Unlimited Gacha comes in a physical media edition perfect for fans of vengeful adventurers who seek to prove others wrong to underestimate them. The series rarely falters to deliver the sensation of an underdog using his powerful means to best all those who wronged him, but its reliance on the trope often overshadows the potential for a more nuanced performance.

The series presents a world where humans are the inferior race, and Light's promotion to the Concord of Tribes special expedition is a rare chance to prove himself among the more capable non-human individuals. This opportunity is severely undermined by the betrayal of his party, who attack him within the dungeon's depths after he refuses to join them. Left to survive on his own within the seemingly unsurvivable environment of the Abyss, Light discovers the true power of his Unlimited Gacha, a special ability manifested by random summons with unique levels and skills. As the adventurer realizes the potential of his power, the narrative provides the fuel for his revenge on the traitorous individuals who wronged him.

The premise of Unlimited Gacha and Light's journey through the dungeon perfectly encapsulates the appeal of a power fantasy where the protagonist is underestimated by others but possesses tools that allow him to overcome seemingly impossible odds. This sensibility is further enhanced by the vengeful undertone of the series, as Light is not only capable of surpassing his attackers but also has the power to destroy them in spectacular fashion. The simplicity of the concept and its execution is the series' primary strength, as betrayal provides motivation for revenge, while the unlimited power of the titular ability serves as the instrument for it.

The very force that drives the protagonist, however, is also the reason for the narrative's weaknesses. After discovering the true power of his special ability, Light rarely loses a direct fight, and the series struggles to provide the tension afforded by his seemingly unstoppable potential. While there are few limitations to the power of Unlimited Gacha, the series provides a significant number of adversaries for the adventurer to overcome, which limits the impact of the power fantasy. The focus on revenge allows for similar observations, as betrayal is a simple motivation for an epic confrontation, but the series has little interest in examining the psychological effects of such an ordeal on the protagonist.

The characters, voice acting, and performances in general, manage to strike an adequate balance between the power fantasy and the revenge- driven narrative. Light is presented as an underdog with relatively limited means and an overcast future, and this contrast is the primary source of the series' appeal. His power fantasies are rarely explored beyond the obvious circumstances of him using his power to become stronger and defeat those who wronged him, but this approach is consistent with the premise of Light being the victim of manipulation. The series' focus on this aspect of the character makes him somewhat one-dimensional, but the overall approach is understandable given the premise of the series.

On the other hand, Mei, the protagonist's maid, represents the series' other side, where personal loyalty is the reason for her employment. She is one of the few individuals loyal to Light within the dungeon, which highlights the potential for relationships beyond the revenge-driven dynamic. The series manages to avoid the potential of Light being presented as a villain despite his power by providing a variety of allies on his side, each of whom has their own motivations to assist him. While Light is the focus of the narrative, Unlimited Gacha rarely presents him as the sole factor in his success, which provides a welcome change from the power fantasy genre.

The anime provides an adequate variety of supporting characters, each of whom fits within the genre and serves a specific purpose within the narrative. The variety is limited by the series' reliance on the power fantasy, and some of the characters exist primarily to demonstrate the power of Unlimited Gacha rather than to develop the story or explore other aspects of the world. Nina Tamaki, Ikumi Hasegawa, Hana Hishikawa, Shiori Izawa, Ayumi Mano, and Yūko Natsuyoshi have their respective roles for the Japanese version.

The performances are consistent with the general tone of the series, which is more focused on the power fantasy and the revenge aspects rather than character development. The English version is also available, which allows the viewers to enjoy the series without dealing with subtitles, but the performances are equally adequate within the scope of the limited ambition of the production.

My gift LVL 9999 Unlimited Gacha delivers an entertaining viewing experience fueled by the power fantasy and revenge genres. The series combines the strengths of character-driven performances with the visual appeal of a world where Light must rely on his power to survive the enemies who seek to kill him within the dungeon. The episode presentation is rather typical for a television anime, but the approach fits the series' reliance on familiar genres and its limited ambition to deliver a simple revenge-driven narrative.

The production values of the series are adequate within the scope of a modern television anime production, focusing on the contrast between the protagonist's circumstances at the beginning of his journey and the opportunities provided by Unlimited Gacha. This approach to the series' visual presentation is consistent with the emphasis on the power fantasy, where the variety of Light's summons is presented in great detail throughout the twelve episodes of the first season. The series effectively utilizes the variety of the fantasy genres, using the dark dungeon environment to showcase the power of magic and the opportunities it provides for combat.

The character designs are crucial to Unlimited Gacha's presentation, and they are performed adequately despite the limited ambition of the production. The variety of Light's summons is crucial to demonstrating the power fantasy of the series, and each of these characters has their own appearance that helps to differentiate them. The designs of the protagonist and his allies, however, are generally typical for a television anime, which is consistent with Unlimited Gacha focusing on the power of the summons rather than the broader worldbuilding and the details of its setting.

The series' action-driven presentation is the most interesting from a visual perspective, as the utilization of magical power is showcased in incredible ways. The series rarely falters to provide opportunities for the characters to demonstrate their power, and the most satisfying scenes are the ones where the abilities of the characters are showcased in interesting ways. The series' reliance on power fantasy limits the potential for encounters involving unique circumstances and opportunities for improvising within the confines of the battle, however, which makes some of the encounters formulaic.

Unlimited Gacha's strengths are best experienced within the context of its genres. The series rarely strives to be something greater than a power fantasy fueled by the revenge genre, and its adequate within the scope of these constraints.

My Gift Lvl 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I'm Out for Revenge! - Complete First Season Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Sentai Filmworks, the series is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The 1080p resolution helps to highlight the strengths of the production, but the animation's overall quality is appropriate for the resolution, which ensures that no additional details are lost due to compression. A quality high-definition presentation.

The technical specifications of the complete first-season Blu-ray release are typical for a production for television anime, which was produced with the intention of delivering a power fantasy. The 1080p high-definition presentation, combined with MPEG-4 AVC and 1.78:1 aspect ratio, show that the series utilizes the potential of high-definition media to deliver an appropriate viewing experience without additional issues.

The series is reliant on contrast to deliver an exciting presentation. The imagery within the episodes is highly stylized, with the black color of the dungeon serving as the primary background for most of the series' scenes. This presentation is complemented by the variety of effects associated with magic, which range from bright and colorful to dark and gloomy, depending on the type and the source of the magical power. Other aspects of the imagery are equally noteworthy, as the color palettes of the characters' clothing are unique to each individual, which further emphasizes the variety of Light's allies and the variety of magical power at his disposal.

The relatively simple presentation allows the animation to retain its clarity without additional elements complicating the scenes. The 1080p resolution is considerably higher than the standard definition presentation of the DVDs, which underscores the difference between the two formats. The anime's reliance on power fantasy further accentuates the value of visual presentation, as it rarely aims to deliver a deeper experience beyond the satisfaction provided by the power of the characters' abilities.

My Gift Lvl 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I'm Out for Revenge! - Complete First Season Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The release includes Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Channel track and an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Channel option for the complete first-season release. English subtitles are provided for the original language version. The subtitles are well done.

The audio presentation of Unlimited Gacha is adequate within the context of the series' genres and production values. The 2.0 stereo mix is appropriate for a television anime, and the series rarely takes advantage of the wider possibilities afforded by modern surround sound mixes. This approach to the series' audio presentation is entirely consistent with My gift LVL 9999 Unlimited Gacha being primarily a character-driven story where the focus is on the interactions between the characters rather than the presentation of the world. The dialogue performances, therefore, receive sufficient attention and support from the audio presentation, which allows the actors to deliver their performances without additional challenges imposed by the mix.

On the other hand, the music and sound effects are equally important for the series' presentation, as Unlimited Gacha focuses on the power fantasy fueled by the abilities of the characters. In this capacity, the audio presentation of the series is highly dependent on the strength of its musical score and the variety of effects utilized for the individual abilities of the characters. The stereo mix is sufficient in this capacity, as a television anime typically utilizes the same approach for delivering the sound effects and the musical score alike. This method rarely produces particularly impressive results, but it is entirely appropriate for the series' genres and production values.

The presence of the English dub is an important consideration for the viewers who prefer to engage with the series without the need for subtitles. This option is entirely appropriate for Unlimited Gacha, which rarely strives to be something greater than a simple power fantasy. At the same time, the original Japanese version remains preferable due to the performances delivered by the cast, who all sound particularly impressive within the context of the series' presentation. This factor is particularly relevant for the audio presentation, as the voices of the characters are often utilized to emphasize their abilities and their associated themes. It is impossible to discuss the specific strengths of the original Japanese version without listening to the release itself, however, and the same considerations apply to the English dub.

My Gift Lvl 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I'm Out for Revenge! - Complete First Season Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

My Gift LVL 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I'm Out for Revenge! is an entertaining series that rarely struggles to deliver the excitement of a powerful adventurer who has received the means to defeat his enemies. The series' strengths are intrinsically linked to its weaknesses, as the reliance on the power fantasy results in few challenges for the protagonist, which limits the potential for his encounters to be meaningful.

Fans have an opportunity to own the set on physical media. A nice option for those who don't want to be limited to or forced to stream on streaming services. A nice set for the fans and certainly one fans will consider owning. Recommended.
