Sony has released the fan-favorite 1997 RomCom 'My Best Friend's Wedding' to the UHD format. New specifications include 2160p/Dolby Vision video and Dolby Atmos Audio. A few new extras are included in addition to the legacy Blu-ray content that was found on the 2015 Blu-ray release. All extras are on the UHD disc. No Blu-ray disc is included; this is a UHD and digital copy package only.
The included screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray disc.
My Best Friend's Wedding walks down the aisle wearing a resplendent 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD presentation. The image is gorgeous as
expected from Sony. The picture is beautifully filmic, retaining ample, but never overpowering, grain, striking a perfect balance between flatteringly
present and complimentary in density. The result is a practically perfect film-like image that shows extreme detail in faces, clothes, and environments,
all sharper and clearer than the old Blu-ray, which was (and still is) fine in its own right, can offer. The sense of natural grace and film-like stability is
evident in practically every shot. Fans will be delighted with the level of definition on display.
The Dolby Vision grading offers balanced colors, presenting with more natural stability and life compared to the Blu-ray. Depth is improved and density
is striking. The colors are organically filmic and delight in all lighting conditions, whether Roberts' red hair, a yellow dress Diaz wears in her debut scene,
or any other number of flavor tones, including green grass at a ballfield and warm accents at a clothing store at the 41-minute mark and a church a few
minutes later. Black levels are rich and stable, whites are bright and crisp, and skin tones are healthy and faithful, if not mildly pasty looking at times.
The picture shows no encode issues, either. fans are going to fall in love with this RomCom classic all over again on this excellent UHD release.
Wedding bells are a-ringing in My Best Friend's Wedding, and Sony's Dolby Atmos soundtrack presents them, and every other audio cue in the film, with delightful clarity and simplicity. This is a RomCom, so there's not a deluge of high-octane audio content to be found, and certainly not a barrage of discrete height effects, but the upper end channels do contribute to creating a fuller atmosphere in bustling locales, whether at a ballpark, out on city streets, or in other locations with some fuller ambient elements at play. Surround engagement is generally gentle, whether effects or music, but the listener will appreciate the little touches that the larger expansive encode provides. Musical clarity is satisfying, and its width is seamless along the front and through the other channels as well. Dialogue propels the track, and it is presented with faultless center placement, prioritization, and definition.
Sony debuts My Best Friend's Wedding on the UHD format with a blend of new and returning legacy bonuses. Material new to this release are
noted as such below. Coverage of existing content can be found by clicking here. No Blu-ray copy is included. However, Sony
has bundled in a Movies Anywhere digital copy voucher. This release ships with a non-embossed slipcover.
My Best Friend's Wedding shows surprising depth in its story, a story that looks at the consequences of true love not so much brushed aside but put on hold, given time to make sure the heart is right rather than trust that it's not wrong. It's in many ways a typical RomCom and, in others, largely atypical, keeping up appearances as it sorts out a messy love triangle that, up until the last little bit, doesn't point in any one direction other than humorous chaos and heartfelt charm. The movie is very well performed, tightly written, and keenly directed. It's one of Roberts' best in a long list of great films and arguably, aside from Pretty Woman, her fluffiest and funniest yet most fundamentally gratifying. Sony's UHD release of My Best Friend's Wedding features near reference-quality 2160p/Dolby Vision video, a fine new Dolby Atmos soundtrack, and a handful of carryover supplements from the Blu-ray in addition to a few new extras. Highly recommended.
