As a director working on the fringes of the industry, David DeCoteau has kept his career alive through sheer speed, manufacturing slices of horror and comedy for the DTV market at a remarkable rate. His muse is Linnea Quigley, the celebrated Scream Queen and a frequent collaborator. They spent plenty of time together in the 1980s, and the new Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray double feature release of “Murder Weapon” and “Deadly Embrace” highlights their working relationship, with DeCoteau maintaining focus on Quigley’s visual assets, but also testing her dramatic range as he organizes a pair of productions that are more than happy to deliver all types of B-movie escapism.

"Murder Weapon" and "Deadly Embrace" aren't high art. They're no-budget distractions meant to provide cheap thrills, often highlighting naked actresses. However, DeCoteau makes an effort to infuse a little excitement into the proceedings, jazzing up the norm with an eagerness to please, while teasing cinematic artistry as he fights to collect enough good ideas to cover all the bad ones.
