Mother Blu-ray Movie Review
Mommy not-so-dearest.
Reviewed by Martin Liebman December 26, 2013
Catherine "Cat" Hardy (Kirsten Prout) and her best friend Emily Hargroves (Chloe Bridges) are inseparable. They share the same hobbies, the same
ambitions, and plan on attending Brown University together. They're both in the running for student body president. Cat wins by the slimmest of
margins and is granted admittance to the university. Emily loses the election and is rejected from Brown. Soon, strange postings appear on Cat's
social media website, posts that she didn't make and that alienate her form her classmates. As her life spirals out of control, her mother Susan
(Daryl Hannah) urges her to stay home and attend community college instead.

Wow! A Nigerian prince wants to send me $10,000,000.00!
Mother may play out like a Lifetime movie-of-the-week, and sport about the same production qualities, but it's nevertheless one of the best
titles The Asylum has released in some time. There are no miserable special effects, the acting is actually decent, and the story, while rather trite
and predictable, is nevertheless told in such a way as to remain interesting for the duration. Combined with a timely plot about bullying, cyber
security, and overprotective parents, there's actually a legitimate reason to give it a watch, if only to see how social media, used improperly, can
destroy lives.
Mother Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

Mother looks terrific on Blu-ray. The Asylum's HD video transfer is practically flawless outside of light banding. Colors are robust and naturally
vibrant, with brightly lit and daytime exterior scenes sparkling. Detail is exquisite, capturing the smallest seam and texture on clothing and fine lines in
faces. Likewise, supportive background elements like tree bark, grasses, and computer screens are richly presented. Black levels and flesh tones
appear accurately portrayed.
Mother Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

Mother's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack delivers positive, energetic music to open, playing with excellent spacing and rock-solid
clarity. Background sound effects in the school -- chatty students, footfalls, and bells -- create a pleasant, realistic atmosphere. Dialogue is the
primary element here, however, and it's relayed through the center channel without a hitch.
Mother Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

Mother contains the usual Asylum supplements.
- "Making of" Featurette (HD, 8:44): Cast and crew talk up the movie.
- Gag reel (HD, 5:57).
- Previews: Additional titles from Asylum Home Entertainment.
Mother Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Mother isn't movie of the year, but it may just be the best thing The Asylum released in 2013. Granted, the bar is extremely low, but this is
certainly a watchable, dare say even entertaining and occasionally captivating, film in the movie-of-the-week style. The Asylum's Blu-ray release of
Mother features superb video and audio. The usual throwaway Asylum extras are included. Recommended if found on a good sale.
