Released alongside the standard Blu-ray and 4K editions of Warner Bros.' new animated feature Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, this Steelbook packaging variant (available exclusively at Target, both in-store and online) is aimed directly at collectors and die-hard fans of the franchise. Although no 4K option is available for this edition, it's a nice alternative to the standard Blu-ray for just a few dollars more.
For information about this Blu-ray's 1080p transfer, please see my review of the standard Blu-ray.
For information about the DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix, please see my review of the standard Blu-ray.
This two-disc release is housed in collectible Steelbook packaging that mimics most of the outer design elements of the standard Blu-ray and 4K editions. Likewise, the same promotional insert and Digital Copy slip are tucked inside.
For a full list of the on-disc bonus features, please see my review of the standard Blu-ray.
I didn't expect much out Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge coming in blind, but this is a very well-done animated film that captures the franchise's most iconic and engaging elements. I have a feeling that die-hard MK fans will love it even more, from its solid visual design and great audio mix to the countless little Easter eggs scattered around. Warner Bros.' Blu-ray presentation is pretty damn good too, and Target's Steelbook variant ups the ante with nice design elements -- the only down-side here is no 4K option, which would have made this the best option for just about everyone. It's still a very safe bet if you're not set up for 4K or just love collecting Steelbooks, though.
