Almost five years after their standard 4K combo pack, Warner Bros. now offers this 4K Steelbook edition of Simon McQuoid's Mortal Kombat, a lukewarm cinematic reboot of the iconic fighting game franchise. It features identical on-disc contents to that previous release, with one major caveat: there's no Blu-ray copy included, since WB has become allergic to combo packs in recent years. This means there are no bonus features either, which makes this a substantial downgrade. Even if this were the best-designed Steelbook in history (it's not), it'd be tough to recommend.

NOTE: These screenshots are sourced from a Blu-ray disc, available as part of the 4K combo pack or separately.
For my thoughts on the 2160p/HDR10 transfer, please see my review linked above.

Likewise, my thoughts about the Dolby Atmos mix can be found at the 4K review linked above.

This one-disc release ships in a glossy Steelbook that can and will show fingerprints, especially on its ample areas of solid black. As for the design elements, it features an imposing in-your-face closeup of Scorpion on the front cover and a smaller image of his iconic spear on the back. Inside is a contrasting two-panel spread of Sub-Zero hiding behind a wall of ice, with a Digital Copy redemption slip on the left and the lone 4K disc beside it. This certainly isn't the most creative design around, but it should at least appeal to die-hard fans of the iconic characters.
As mentioned earlier, no bonus features are included since there's no Blu-ray here. This was a pretty dumb decision by the studio and actually makes this release inferior to the 4K combo pack, which is also cheaper.

I didn't think much of Simon McQuoid's Mortal Kombat in 2021 and it barely broke even at the box office, but we're still getting a sequel set for release in May. That's the main reason for this belated 4K Steelbook variant, but it comes up short due to the company's abandonment of combo packs in recent years; simply put, there's no Blu-ray copy, which means those special features from the 4K combo pack are missing in action too. Even at the current sale price, then, it's impossible to recommend this Steelbook to all but the most rabid collectors.
