Director Cheryl Dunn takes a look at the whirlwind life of artist Dashiell Alexander Whitney Snow in “Moments Like This Never Last,” remaining curious about a man who was born into privilege, only to break away from expectation, living a life that rejected “laws” and the “system.” Snow died of a heroin overdose in 2009, leaving behind a strange life and legacy that’s of interest to Dunn, who gathers pictures, video footage, and interviewees to help examine the life and times of Snow, attempting to preserve his position in the art world with her documentary.

Dunn has access to Snow’s life, working with all types of media to construct of a portrait of a young man who elected to shed the formality of life, choosing to experience the world on his own terms. Born into wealth, Snow eventually took to art, and “Moments Like This Never Last” examines his journey into the scene of the late 1990s, joining various crews and handling graffiti duties, building a reputation for his easygoing demeanor and work. This attention developed over the 2000s, encouraging gallery owners and art collectors to seek out a young man with anarchic style, using the chaos of his life to feed his imagination.

A satisfying documentary makes the subject accessible to all, providing a thorough understanding of behavior and experience. "Moments Like This Never Last" is primarily for a limited audience of underground art lovers and New Yorkers looking to catch a glimpse of the city as it was over two decades ago. Dunn has access to so much, and as colorful as Snow's life is, there's not a lot of depth here, leaving viewers not tapped into the hyper- specifics of the scene with a superficial appreciation for Snow and his occasionally problematic ways.
