Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman December 16, 2016

Ransom Riggs' quasi-epistolary novel would seem to be a near perfect fit for the sensibilities of director Tim Burton, but as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children itself avers, appearances can be deceiving. Fox is nonetheless releasing the film in three formats, including this 4K UHD version.

For my thoughts on the film, please see our original Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Blu-ray review.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is presented on 4K UHD courtesy of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment with a 2160p transfer in 1.85:1. A 4K DI offers this UHD presentation some nice if sometimes subtle uptick in detail levels from the 1080p Blu-ray version, with a number of textures in clothing, fabrics (like the couch in the psychiatrist's office) and even facial pores having new precision in this iteration. There are some really nicely nuanced new interstitial tones in some of the more heavily graded sequences, including the first deep blue sequence where Jake finds his grandfather in back of his house, or, later, the underwater sequence when Emma takes Jake to the shipwreck. CGI looks marginally sharper here, but as with several previous UHD presentation, for some reason flames (in this case a fire at the local pub) looks "animated", as in cartoon like. There are a few moments of very minor judder in both vertical and horizontal pans.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

This 4K UHD version of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children ups the sonic ante from the 1080p Blu-rays DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix to Dolby Atmos (with a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 core). The 1080p Blu-ray sound mix is consistently immersive and often quite inventive, and those proclivities are only increased with the Atmos channels engaged. There are a number of really neat pinpoint placements of effects, some relatively minor (like the door opening when Jake joins the kids for dinner at Miss Peregrine's), which have a more spatial presence in the Atmos mix than the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 version. As with the 1080p Blu-ray version, though, there's near ubiquitous surround presence due to both ambient environmental noises and more whimsical sound effects, especially once the Peculiars and Hollows enter the fray.

Note: As tends to be the case with Fox 4K UHD releases, the audio and subtitle options are different from those on the 1080p Blu-ray. Therefore, please consult the specs of both reviews for appropriate information.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  n/a of 5

The 4K UHD disc has no supplements and the above score reflects that deficit. The 1080p Blu-ray included in this package includes all of the supplements detailed in our Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Blu-ray review.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children isn't able to quite capture the magic of the source novel(s), but it's fitfully engaging, at least for those willing to overlook lapses in logic and several sadly underdeveloped characters. This 4K UHD version nicely if subtly upgrades both video and audio, and my recommendation is for those considering a purchase to consider this version for that reason.
