Migration 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 21, 2025

Migration 3D is an incredible and fun animated family film. Produced by Christopher Meledandri (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2), Migration 3D comes from a story by Mike White and Benjamin Renner. Executive produced by Joy Poirel, Migration 3D features the voices of Kumail Nanjiani, Tresi Gazal, Elizabeth Banks, Caspar Jennings, Isabela Merced, Danny DeVito, Carol Kane, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, and David Mitchell.

A close family of ducks embark on a new adventure. The ducks find themselves wanting to step out and try something new: a family vacation. The ducks haven’t been on vacation in a long time and there are plenty of new adventures in store for the ducks as the characters traverse through the wind. The epic journey is one that shows them the beauty of the land and the path of migration.

The cast of characters in Migration includes Mack (Kumail Nanjiani), Gwen (Tresi Gazal), Pam (Elizabeth Banks), Dax (Caspar Jennings), Kim (Isabela Merced), Uncle Dan (Danny DeVito), Erin (Carol Kane), Chump (Awkwafina), Delroy (Keegan-Michael Key), and GooGoo (David Mitchell). The voice cast is outstanding. The actors do a great job providing the voices for the animated feature-film. There is a sense of wonder to the performances and what the voice-cast delivers. With so many wonderful voice actors involved with the production, the efforts are outstanding.

The production designs by Colin Stimpson (The Secret Life of Pets 2, Kronk's New Groove) add a lot to the production, too. Stimpson did a solid job with the production. The designs are top-notch and the efforts are perfect for the feature-film and its storytelling. The visuals are enhanced through the nice designs.

The animation is breathtaking. There is so much wonderful visual beauty in the animation and the CG art style is an impressive part of the filmmaking. The animation direction and style creates a compelling and essential visual sensibility that enhances the storytelling in spades. The team of animators clearly did an incredible job with the feature and by providing it with an abundance of charm.

Composed by John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, How to Train Your Dragon 2), Migration features a solid original score. The score is a joy and adds so much warmth and charm. An engaging effort by Powell and it joins the ranks of the composers best scores.

Edited by Christian Gazal (Mountain Quest, Peter Rabbit), Migration is well paced. The editing style works extremely well for the production. Gazal is a talent and the vision for the feature-film adds something charming. A well-paced family feature.

Written by Mike White (School of Rock, Despicable Me 4), Migration is all the better due to the fantastic script. Mike White is one of the best screenwriters in the industry when it comes to crafting charming, sweet-natured, and fun films. White has a way with words and created some gems over the years. An impressive script with good dialogue and characterizations. The comedy element adds a lot to the film, too. Animated films can be hit or miss when it comes to the comedic qualities and Migration is one that manages to get far more right than wrong in terms of good comedic timing and style. The results help to add so much to the filmmaking. White made something truly special here and audiences will appreciate the style.

Directed by Benjamin Renner (Ernest & Celestine, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales) and Guylo Homsy (Minions & More 2, Midnight Mission), Migration is a wonderful production. The filmmaking is quite beautiful and engaging. Migration is a sweet-natured family gem and there are so many wonderful aspects to the storytelling. Renner is a gifted filmmaker and the style here showcases the best of animated films.

Migration 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Turbine Media, Migration 3D is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.39:1 widescreen. The high-definition video looks incredible on the Blu-ray release. The animation on display is robust and it is remarkably well detailed throughout.

The presentation showcases the 3D visuals in a spectacular way. The 3D is so immersive and the outstanding send of depth makes the presentation all the more engaging. 3D fans won't want to miss out on the 3D presentation. The colors pop with outstanding clarity.

The 3D visuals are robust and make the presentation all the more worthwhile. If fans can choose between the 4K, 3D, or standard options, the 3D version is the best possible version and is a must-see for enthusiasts of the 3D format. 3D fans will love the presentation and will not be disappointed by the quality of the release.

Blu-ray also has an advantage over streaming in terms of consistency of presentation, too. Streaming video can sometimes have fluctuations in presentation quality from other variables – such as service plans, plan speeds, weather issues, number of connected users, data caps, and other variables. The difference with physical media is that it offers something dependable – something that one can simply pick up, put on, and enjoy – a tangible production offering something with consistent gains for fans to enjoy.

Migration 3D Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

The release includes a Dolby Atmos surround sound presentation. The Atmos sound mixing is incredible and adds so much charm to the feature- film. The Atmos sound design is highly engaging and effective throughout. The sound mix provides great detail in each of the surround channels and brings out an incredible sense of wonder in the presentation.

One of the great qualities of physical media is the lossless audio encoding. Blu-ray provides lossless, theater quality sound. The theater quality lossless sound of the physical format provides a more immersive soundstage. The audio appeals all the more to home theater enthusiasts as well as audiophiles.

Migration 3D Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.0 of 5

The release comes in a beautiful clear Criterion style case. The case looks great in hand on will look fantastic on the shelf. The release comes with reversible cover-art, too. The reversible cover art has one side with the English credits title and the other side with the German import credit titles. The alternate cover art options are both nice and make a solid impression on the release. The disc art is impressive, too. The overall quality of the release and its design makes it something nice.

Despicable Me Mini Movie 3D (HD, 8:39) is a charming and sweet animated short film. The 3D is top-notch and look fantastic on the release. I was impressed by how good the 3D depth was on this short title. The 3D visuals were top-notch and it made the animation stand out in an even more impressive and meaningful way. Fans of short animated features (and 3D in general) will find something to enjoy here.

Although Turbine Media usually does not include any supplements on the 3D Blu-ray releases, it is a nice exception to see a 3D short film included on this particular release (as it was paired with the Migration feature). Turbine Media usually recommends picking up the separately available 4K/Blu-ray combo pack editions.

Fans who want a more complete supplemental package can add these separately available releases. Although it would be nice to see more expansive extras included on the same release directly it certainly remains a nice option to consider – adding one of the other releases (sold separately) to obtain the bonus features. An option well worth considering.

The 3D Blu-ray release provides an excellent 3D presentation. The release also features an exceptional Dolby Atmos surround sound option. The 3D effects are incredible and the depth is stunning. The fun Atmos sound mix adds to the experience in spades, too.

The release also includes a Despicable Me Mini Movie in 3D. The bonus of the 3D short film was a nice touch for the release. The 3D short film is entertaining, too. The short is well worth watching and the 3D effects were impressive in the short feature. Fans will want to pick up the release for their 3D collection. Highly recommended.
