Note: 'Men in Black' is currently only available on UHD as part of a three-film collection. The included Blu-ray is 2D only; the Blu-ray 3D version is not included.
The included screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray disc. Watch for 4K screenshots at a later date.
For those following along and who have taken a look at the reviews for both Men in Black and Men in Black II on UHD, expectations are probably running high for this
third
film. And it doesn't disappoint. One could essentially transplant either of those reviews here and be done with it. There's little different. Grain is
a constant companion, presenting very evenly and attractively, lending a gorgeous filmic appearance to the proceedings. Details are exceptional, with
basic faces, hair, clothes, and environments dazzling with every opportunity, whether in the present or the past on dense city streets or considering the
clean, slick lines of of MiB headquarters. The picture is consistently sharp and precise, and even visual effects shots don't soften or smooth out too
much.
The HDR color palette is exceptional, accentuating and deepening the colors without betraying the movie's essential appearance. There's an added
depth and
firmness, increased vitality and punch while maintaining the same look and feel, just with more nuanced saturation. Again, black suits and white shirts
are actually as much of a highlight as any other color. Shadow detail, core black depth, and skin tones are fine. Source and compression issues are
nonexistent. This is a wonderful presentation from Sony.,
Much like the video, one could simply copy and paste the same review from the previous films in the series here. MiB 3's Dolby Atmos soundtrack delivers a perfectly wonderful listening experience. It's big and organically sprawling, always enveloping the listener with music and mayhem alike. Musical delivery finds wide, effective spread along the front, engaged surround usage, and balanced low end depth. Action scenes expand and explode with impressive attention to detail even as the action grows quite chaotic at times, including various shootouts and clashes where shots zip about with substantial weight and crashes earn a healthy bass wallop. Environmental effects encircle with clarity and precision. Overheads support nearly every element, sometimes more distinctly but often in a complimentary role. Dialogue is clear and precisely positioned and prioritized.
Men in Black 3's UHD disc contains no supplements beyond the standard Sony cast and crew still photo tab and collection of categorized
highlight
"moments" (2160p/HDR/Atmos), here including Agent Jay, Agent Kay, Young Agent Kay, and Aliens. All of the
core supplemental content can be found on the bundled Blu-ray, which is identical to the 2012 release. For convenience, below is a list of what's
included. For full supplement reviews, please click here.
Men in Black 3 is better than the second but nowhere near as good as the first. It's a fun follow-up with some clever ideas and directions for the franchise. Sony's UHD release delivers pristine 4K/HDR picture and fantastic Atmos sound. No new extras are included, but the bundled Blu-ray, identical to the original release, offers a decent little assortment of bonuses. Recommended.
