When you think major onscreen matchups, there’s “King Kong vs. Godzilla,” “Freddy vs. Jason,” and “Aliens vs. Predator.” Perhaps even “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.” The adult film business has their titans as well, with director Carlos Tobalina daring to bring to the screen the match up of the century…well, maybe just 1982, in “Mai Lin vs. Serena,” which puts the performers on a quest to prove their worth as they make a wager to see who can score a top role in a new X-rated endeavor. The production certainly doesn’t get ambitious with the idea, primarily sticking with extended carnal encounters featuring the stars and their adventures around various businesses and living spaces, putting its faith into the appeal of Serena and Mai Lin as they explore their appetites and compete for big money and an employment opportunity.

Director Carlos (Carlos Tobalina) has a real problem on his hands. He’s about to start production on his latest movie, but he has two actresses perfect for the lead role, forced to select the “hottest girl in motion pictures.” The candidates are Mai Lin and Serena, and they’re both hungry for the job opportunity and its $25,000 payday. To make it interesting, the actresses elect to make a wager, putting the part and the money on the line as they set out to put their adult film star talents to the test. It’s a mission that involves various scenarios of seduction, sending the duo into a restaurant, a gay bar, and even the local jail to see what kind of heat they can generate, working together to make sure a good portion of the local community walk away from the twosome satisfied with their sexual skills.

Story isn’t the main selling point of “Mai Lin vs. Serena.” The title accurately sells the viewing experience, following the actresses as they face a professional challenge, willing to put money and fame on the line to prove their superiority when it comes to erotic power. The picture basically follows the duo into situations of seduction, beginning with a trip to a local restaurant for a meal and chance to launch their wager, entering an establishment that contains other patrons seemingly out for a night of fun. “Mai Lin vs. Serena” is an adult production, and time in the restaurant reveals the limited nature of the shoot, as the set is fully exposed in a few shots, including cameras positioned into place as the action begins. While it seems intentional, it’s soon revealed to be a mistake, as Mai Lin and Serena commence their journey by taking on the room, devouring customers and staff (even the chef!) while partner swapping occurs.

Group activity is the focus of “Mai Lin vs. Serena,” which moves the actresses over to a gay bar setting, meeting couple Jade and Sharon, who are extremely interested in spending time with the stars. Eroticism commences, without help from the bartender, and it’s soon interrupted by two men (Herschel Savage and Mike Horner) who are happy to be invited to a sexual scene occurring on top of a corner bar booth and table. You may be wondering why two straight guys are seeking late nigh beverages at a queer establishment, but asking questions of “Mai Lin vs. Serena” is futile. One must simply go with the flow as Serena and Mai Lin wield their powers of influence in the strangest of adult film settings.

Abruptly, the duo end up in jail, which sets up another wager situation as they battle to see who can tempt John the guard first (spoiler: Mai Lin wins). Incarceration doesn’t stop these actresses, who are eventually joined by another guard, keeping things lively for the picture. The actual charges facing Mai Lin and Serena aren’t revealed, but they don’t seem to have any trouble with their legal situation.

Color is alert in the endeavor, with limited sets providing rich primaries, exploring a restaurant and bar that's filled with heavy reds. Style choices are also vivid, and makeup is distinct, along with hair color. Skin tones are natural, exploring a wide assortment of tanned and porcelain performers. The picture is made up almost entirely of interiors, which maintain dimension. Detail deals with softer skin particulars, examining blemishes and fine hairs. Costuming is fibrous, going from lingerie to thicker uniforms. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is heavy. Source has pronounced stretches of wear and tear, encountering mild discoloration and heavy scratches.

"Mai Lin vs. Serena" actually commences with an orgy, which is an event typically reserved for last act bigness in adult cinema. Tobalina has something else in mind for his closer, arranging a house visit for Mai Lin and Serena, who welcome around 15 men into their living space, which is newly decorated with a pink bathtub in the middle of the living room. It doesn't take long to understand what's about to happen, taking the movie into a much goopier direction for the actresses, though the ending isn't really about domination, but a form of teamwork, confusing the whole wager business. Again, "Mai Lin vs. Serena" isn't dramatically substantial, but there's resolution in a way, and Tobalina looks to involve as many people as possible in the film, giving it a strangely epic quality. It's entertaining enough, and it's certainly a showcase for Mai Lin and Serena, who are out to prove their flexibility when it comes to the radical changing of evening plans.
