Are you a fan of Project Runway or its current spin off Project Runway: Under the Gunn? Are your favorite judges people like Nina Garcia or Zanna Roberts Rassi, style makers who work for high profile fashion magazines like Marie Claire? If so, you might be just the target audience for a glossy but ultimately kind of shallow documentary about former Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld, a woman who is evidently something of an icon in the fashion world, but whose name might not be as well known to some Americans as, say, Anna Wintour, allegedly the inspiration for the harridan boss in The Devil Wears Prada.

Mademoiselle C is built largely around Roitfeld’s departure from Vogue Paris and her attempts to launch her own magazine, CR Fashion Book. The fact that Roitfeld uses her initials to brand her new business may be some sign of a certain narcissistic quality this documentary wallows in, with a lot of absurdly beautiful people air kissing each other and carrying on conversations that only the rich and beautiful can get away with. The documentary would seem to have some built in tension with Roitfeld’s attempt to reinvent herself, not to mention some incipient drama courtesy of her ex-employer Condé Nast, but like a high profile fashion model, Mademoiselle C, while certainly agreeable enough to look at, doesn’t seem to possess any humanity or a recognizable soul.

Mademoiselle C is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Cohen Media Group with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.85:1. This is a decently sharp and well detailed release that ironically pops the best in some of its transitory on the fly moments, like people arriving at a club, rather than in more stationary sequences like the many first person confessional interviews Roitfeld delivers directly to the camera. Colors are generally solid, though contrast seems dialed a bit low at times, especially in some of the interior shots.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix included here is actually in a number of languages (including English), but the bulk of Roitfeld's comments tend to be in French with optional English subtitles. Aside from a couple of nice scenes on runways or in clubs and the like, there really isn't a wealth of surround activity here, though fidelity is top notch throughout the documentary.

Star gazers may get a kick out of this piece, since Roitfeld tends to hang with the rich and famous crowd, but as a penetrating insight into a rather interesting woman, Mademoiselle C is strangely bland and uninvolving. Technical merits are generally fine with this release.
