Autumn Moon is one step short of a triad, and an ocean removed from respectability. A go-nowhere, no-nothing nobody, Moon is the boss of his own gang, which has one member, a retarded fellow named Sylvester, and passes his time playing basketball and collecting debts for local triad Wing. Marginalized by society and perhaps his own poor self-image, Moon nonetheless attempts to make his mark on the world, finding direction in his love for Ping, a young girl suffering from renal failure, and a chance connection to Susan, a school girl who committed suicide.

Fruit Chan's "Made in Hong Kong" (1997) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Metrograph Pictures and Kino Lorber. The supplemental features on the disc include recent programs with Fruit Chan and producers Daniel Yu and Doris Young; exclusive new audio commentary by critics Sean Gilman and Ryan Swen; and re-release trailer. In Cantonese, with optional English subtitles for the main feature. Region-A "locked".
Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Made in Hong Kong arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Metrograph Pictures and Kino Lorber.
This release introduces the recent excellent 4K restoration of Made in Hong Kong that was finalized under the supervision of director Fruit Chan.
In 2020, we reviewed this Region-B release of Made in Hong Kong from Eureka Entertainment, which introduced the same 4K restoration.
I like a lot how Made in Hong Kong looks after the 4K makeover. It is a highly stylized film that reminds of Christopher Doyle's work, and I think that its unique visuals look terrific now. Colors, light, and shadow interact in very interesting ways and the unique contrasts they produce appear very filmic. Delineation, clarity, and depth are outstanding, though you should expect to see some small fluctuations that are introduced by the interactions I mentioned above. There are no traces of problematic digital corrections. Image stability is excellent. The entire film looks spotless as well. (Note: This is a Region-A "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-B or Region-Free player in order to access its content).
There are two standard audio tracks on this Blu-ray release: Cantonese LPCM 2.0 and Cantonese Dolby Digital 1.0. Optional English subtitles are provided for the main feature.
I viewed the entire film with the LPCM 2.0 track. The soundtrack incorporates plenty of organic sounds and noise, with the moss prominent ones emerging during mass/busier footage, and as a result there are some noticeable dynamic and balance fluctuations. The dialog/narration is clear and easy to follow. The music creates some effective dynamic contrasts, but the overall range of dynamic contrasts is not going to impress folks that appreciate the potent sound designs of the big summer blockbusters. The English translation is excellent.
Fruit Chan's Made in Hong Kong has the genes that defined some of the greatest films of the Hong Kong New Wave. It is so alive and full of energy that certain parts of it look like they could have been lensed by Christopher Doyle. I discovered it a few years ago when British label Eureka Entertainment added it to its catalog, and could not be happier that it is now available in America as well. This release introduces the excellent recent 4K restoration of Made in Hong Kong which was finalized under the supervision of its director. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
