They may be known for their anthemic “Sweet Home Alabama”, but Lynyrd Skynyrd actually hail largely from Florida, and this concert finds the band returning to its hometown of Jacksonville for an emotional and vigorous show that finds lead singer Johnny Van Zant repeatedly urging the audience to show its love—which the audience seems only too happy to do, often overpowering even the band with their shouts of acclaim or (perhaps less felicitously) sing along moments. The band roars through the entire songlists of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s first two albums, sticking fairly close to the recorded versions while also allowing moments for some blistering solos from Gary Rossington.

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Pronounced 'Lĕh-nérd 'Skin-nérd & Second Helping - Live From Jacksonville at The Florida Theatre is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Universal Music Group and Eagle Vision, an imprint of Eagle Rock Entertainment, with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1. While there are occasional issues with banding and posterizing, especially when the camera is pointed squarely at the stage lighting, overall this is a really beautifully sharp and precise looking presentation. Once again some of the stage lighting choices are not especially helpful, with purple and blue hues smoothing out fine detail and adding to the tendency toward posterizing on things like hair or even hands. Coverage of the band is very good, and thankfully the concert does not really indulge in a quick cutting ambience, something that commendably gives the audience the chance to actually see the players.

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Pronounced 'Lĕh-nérd 'Skin-nérd & Second Helping - Live From Jacksonville at The Florida Theatre features both a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and an LPCM 2.0 track, and each choice offers excellent clarity and precision. Van Zant's enjoyably gruff voice is very well prioritized, and the boisterous rhythm section sounds fantastic. Occasionally the two female backup vocalists are slightly buried in the mix, but generally speaking, this release has stellar sounding audio options.

As progenitors of Southern Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd have often thumbed their nose at the fussy (northern) music establishment, and there's a bit of that iconoclastic attitude on display throughout this high energy concert. I personally could have done with a bit less of Van Zant's constant urging of the audience to get "more involved", but the musical content here is first rate. Recommended.
