Love and Other Catastrophes Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 22, 2025

Love and other Catastrophes is an enchanting romantic-comedy gem. Executive produced by Bruno Charlesworth (Russian Doll, Strange Planet), Love and other Catastrophes adapts the story by Stavros Andonis Efthymiou. Produced by Stavros Kazantzidis (Mother Mountain, Strange Planet), Love and other Catastrophes features performances by Frances O'Connor, Alice Garner, Matt Day, Matthew Dyktynski, Radha Mitchell, Suzi Dougherty, and Kim Gyngell.

Sometimes love finds someone when said person least expects to find love. As the peaceful college days of two film students unfolds, Mia (Frances O'Connor) finds herself juggling her film studies alongside an unexpected relationship and a series of miscommunications. Alongside mate Alice (Alice Garner), Mia and Alice struggle with their relationships and college days.

Alice is four years late on finishing up her thesis paper and is still struggling to find the man of her dreams. The women look for love while also exploring their film studies. Can Mia and Alice both find true love and achieve their higher education goals while learning all about the world of cinema?

Frances O'Connor and Alice Garner are the wonderful lead actresses of Love and other Catastrophes. The lead actresses are both wonderful in their respective roles. There is a sense of beauty to both performances. The actresses radiate with warmth and an affection for their roles.

The supporting cast of characters includes Michael Douglas (Matt Day), Ari (Matthew Dyktynski), Danni (Radha Mitchell), Savita (Suzi Dougherty), and Professor Richard Leach (Kim Gyngell). The supporting cast provides strong performances. A well-rounded ensemble.

Love and other Catastrophes features art direction by Lisa Collins. Collins is a talented art director and someone with a keen understanding of the romantic-comedy genre. The production efforts made by Collins are certainly compelling and make a superb impression overall. There is a lot that is well worthwhile.

Composed by Oleh Witer (Hot Summer Down Under), Love and other Catastrophes features a solid score by Witer. The music plays a vital role in the production. The music is so integral to the production and also the storytelling. The music a serene backdrop to the romantic-comedy elements. Well-done.

The cinematography by Justin Brickle (Strange Planet, Russian Doll) is well-done and is beautiful to behold. The cinematography showcases wonderful vibrancy by Brickle. The visuals are robust and satisfying. The efforts immensely stunning and capable of bringing so much vibrancy to the film in spades.

Edited by Ken Sallows (Gettin' Square, Chopper), Love and other Catastrophes is well-edited and the pacing adds a lot to the feature. Sallows is a talented editor and someone with a keen sense of the storytelling necessities and what was needed to bring out the best in the production. The results certainly work well in every arena. The romantic-comedy elements well highlighted by the strong editing.

Written by Yael Bergman (All the Way), Emma-Kate Croghan (Strange Planet), Helen Bandis, and Stavros Kazantzidis (In the Cut, Strange Planet), Love and other Catastrophes is well-done. The script has great elements. The writing certainly plays with the character tropes enormously well. There is a lot worth loving about the script. The romantic element plays hand-in-hand with the story about film studies students.

Directed by Emma-Kate Croghan (Strange Planet, Come as You Are), Love and other Catastrophes is a classic of Australian cinema. The romantic-comedy gem is one of the best Australian films ever made. Heralded as an essential classic in Australia but often overlooked overseas, Love and other Catastrophes is beautiful and heartfelt. The filmmaking is well-done in spades and there is such an elegant and sweet nature to the storytelling that one cannot help but fall in love with the film and the cast of characters.

Beautifully directed by Emma-Kate Croghan, Love and other Catastrophes is a testament to the need and importance of more women’s voices in cinema. It is always a joy to see more women filmmakers being able to express their voices and share their authentic stories. The role of women in filmmaking is an element of storytelling that continues to evolve – as more and more women make their films and explore their own unique stories through the language of cinema. Love and other Catastrophes is remarkable on so many levels and is a testament to the wonder of women filmmakers.

Love and Other Catastrophes Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Umbrella Entertainment, Love and other Catastrophes is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high- definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The high-definition transfer is excellent on the release. Umbrella Entertainment has done a great job with preserving the feature for the disc release.

The video quality on the release looks superb throughout the presentation. The transfer is crisp, clear, and engaging. The naturally filmic image looks all the better on the release. The encoding quality capably highlights the cinematography and the visual sensibilities of the film.

One fun aspect of physical media is how it can provide video quality with higher bit-rates and more consistent presentation quality compared to streaming video services. Streaming video can have occasional fluctuations in quality due to other variables such as service plan tiers, internet data connection speeds, number of connected users, weather issues, and other qualities that can occasionally impact streaming – whereas physical offers something dependable and that is consistently high quality.

Love and Other Catastrophes Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The release is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. The lossless audio is crisp and engaging. The soundtrack is well emphasized. Dialogue is well reproduced. The dynamics of the audio track are impressive. The music plays a big part in the audio presentation. It is quite apparent how well the presentation handles the music and its role in the filmmaking. The subtle but highly effective sound design is beautifully reproduced by Umbrella Entertainment.

One of the great qualities of physical media is the lossless audio encoding. Physical media provides lossless, theater quality audio. For home theater enthusiasts and audiophiles it provides the best possible audio presentation available. Streaming video services only provide lossy (non-lossless) audio quality. There can be a substantial difference with lossless audio and it can make the experience all the more engaging.
