Warner Archive's recent run of Looney Tunes shorts includes four Collector's Choice volumes (later bundled as one handy set) and the double-sized Collector's Vault: Volume 1, but why stop there? The beloved boutique label merrily rolls along with a second oversized set of recently restored cartoons from WB's massive vault, many of which are new to Blu-ray or digital home video entirely. These colorful classics have gotten the royal treatment at a bargain price, and the continued support of fans will certainly translate to even more volumes in the future... because while hundreds of Looney Tunes shorts have already arrived on Blu-ray via other sets like WB's three Platinum Collections and the newly reissued Bugs Bunny Collection, they've still got a ways to go. For now, here's 50 more uncut gems.

"And one for good luck, doc."
All are worth watching, but I'll at least shout out several notable shorts and hidden gems. "A-Lad-in His Lamp" kicks things off and it's a major bucket-list score, as this short marks Bugs Bunny's first trip to the Middle East and includes what now might be seen as offensive stereotypes. Even so, this fun adventure also stars an uncredited Jim Backus (the future voice of Mr. Magoo) as a genie who whisks him off to Baghdad. "The Daffy Duckaroo" is a black-and-white gem from 1942 that finds our hero pursuing a Native American girl who turns out to be from New York. "I Taw A Putty Tat" is the first Tweety and Sylvester short where the li'l guy first utters his titular phrase, while the 1963 Chuck Jones-helmed oddity "I Was a Teenage Thumb" finds the wizard Ralph K. Merlin Jr. granting a tiny baby to a childless couple. "To Itch His Own" is another Jones short and follows Mighty Angelo, the world's strongest flea, during a much-needed vacation from the circus. "A Waggily Tale" is another off-the-beaten-path short where a pint-sized dog abuser learns his lesson in a dream, while "Hop and Go" is a black-and-white rarity with solid voice work by Pinto Colvig (Goofy and Pluto, among others). "The Last Hungry Cat" ladles on the guilt as poor Sylvester, believing he actually ate Tweety, is tormented by a Hitchcockian voice-over. Finally, 1949's "Wise Quackers" sees Daffy Duck serving as a slave on Elmer Fudd's farm and, for obvious reasons, hasn't been presented uncut on American TV for several decades.
As with the earlier sets, neither of these discs focuses on specific characters and the cartoons aren't chronologically sorted; instead, they're presented alphabetically. That's a fine enough solution and fittingly works with Looney Tunes' solid variety-show approach to cartoon comedy, and if nothing else reminds us just how many characters, animators, and directors have been a part of the franchise during these original years. These 51 cartoons are divided neatly into 26 and 25 shorts per disc with a handy "Play All" option for half-marathon viewing.

If you're familiar with Warner Archive's ongoing Looney Tunes sets, you should know exactly what to expect from this two-disc collection as it maintains the boutique label's reliably strong track record. As usual, this one offers a mixture of source materials: most of these 1080p transfers stem from masters undertaken by Warner Bros. earlier this decade, while five shorts were specially restored more recently by Warner Archive from start to finish. (These include "A-Lad-in His Lamp", "Ain't That Ducky", "The Daffy Duckaroo", "Hop and Go", and "I Taw A Putty Tat", with each of their nitrate negatives freshly scanned in 4K.) The rest are also the result of 4K scans of their original negatives and all have been manually cleaned up -- while retaining most if not all of the more organic "imperfections" like occasional cel dirt -- with additional color correction when needed. The giveaway between these sources is in their varying levels of grain: WB's masters look smoother in general, whereas the shorts restored recently by Warner Archive retain a more raw, film-like texture that staunch purists will prefer. As with previous collections, all of this material looks good to outstanding and many of their presentations represent a huge improvement over earlier home video versions.

Also like previous collections, the DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio mixes do a great job of rendering the original mono mixes in a two-channel container, standing decently tall as a solid improvement over previous home video versions. Dialogue, sparse as it can be it certain shorts, is consistently clean and crisp, with familiar sound effects mixed nicely and plenty of room left over for the always on-point orchestral scores. Occasional fidelity differences and volume variances can be heard between shorts; this is mostly due to their chronologically random order, with the later shorts showing a gradual uptick in quality. Overall, I'm happy with the results achieved here and consider it a sturdy 4/5 effort.
Optional English (SDH) subtitles are included during all 51 shorts.

This two-disc set ships in a keepcase with attractive cover art. No inserts are included, but a complete episode list (repurposed above) is printed on the back cover. As for the extras, we actually get a few this time in the form of legacy audio commentaries presumably recorded during the DVD era and last heard on previous SD releases. Nice!
DISC TWO

Warner Archive's Looney Tunes Collector's Vault: Volume 2 boldly continues a noble campaign that began with several earlier collections linked above, all of which offer nicely restored classic shorts for a very reasonable price. The content is consistently good and A/V merits are solid as well, and we even get a handful of legacy audio commentaries this time around. Simply put, this two-disc set belongs on the shelf of even Looney Tunes' most casual fans, as there's about six hours of classic entertainment here for the price of a boring ol' blockbuster. Highly Recommended, of course.
