Look Out, Officer! (1990)

Piao (Bill Tung) has been murdered in the line of duty and seeks revenge beyond the grave. He manipulates a new cop Sing (Stephen Chow) to work for him. Sing's senior Chin (Stanley Fung) used to work with Piao, but he is not entirely satisfied with his new subordinate, especially when Sing has a crush on his daughter (Vivian Chan). Piao's spirit agrees to help Sing in getting promotion and Chin's daughter, in exchange for Sing's help in unveiling his own murder case...

Look Out, Officer! is an entertaining action-comedy. Look Out, Officer! is a remake of another action-comedy classic, the 1986 action-comedy Where's Officer Tuba?, starring Sammo Hung. Produced by Tin-Chi Lau (Knockabout, The Young Master), Look Out, Officer! stars Stephen Chow, Bill Tung, Stanley Sui-Fan Fung, Vivian Chen, and Kong Fong.

Chang Piao (Bill Tung) is a police detective who finds himself becoming a murder victim. After ended up dead and in the ground, Chang unexpected returns from the dead. Chang is now determined to seek out vengeance for his own murder.

Chang teams up with a goofy rookie cop, Hsing (Stephen Chow). Now Chang and Hsing are both on the job looking to resolve the murder. Meanwhile, Hsing begins to have feelings for the gorgeous Yu (Vivian Chen). Can these oddball heroes stop the killer?

The star of the show is Stephen Chow. Chow is one of the greatest of all comedic actors in Hong Kong cinema. Chow has an incredible sense of wit and charm. There is always something magnetic about Chow and his screen presence. Bill Tung is also entertaining in his comedic role – playing well off Stephen Chow. Vivian Chen is likewise a wonderful screen presence for the feature-film.


The film features notable art direction by Frederick Chan (Treasure Inn, Devil's Vendetta). Chan is a noteworthy art director and the production looks all the better as a result. Chan is a talent and is someone who added a lot to the filmmaking.

The costume designs by Suk-Wah Chiu (The Good, the Bad and the Bandit) are well-done. Chiu is a talent and the designs add a lot to the production. The costumes work well for all of the characters – both the lead and supporting actors have effective costume designs.

The cinematography by Wen-Yun Huang (Drunken Master II, Bloody Parrot) is something special to behold. Huang is a gifted cinematographer and someone with great skill with action classics. The production benefits a great deal from the efforts by Huang. The visual style works well for the production.

Edited by Hsing-Lung Chiang (The Avenging Eagle, The Love Eterne), Look Out, Officer! is a well-done feature-film. Chiang is a talented editor and Look Out, Officer! is well paced. The flow of the film is impressive and there are no lulls in the action-comedy.

Composed by Sherman Chow (Sleeping with Two Sisters, Encounter of the Spooky Kind II), Look Out, Officer! has a fun and charming score. The music is a solid backdrop for the action scenes, too. An impressive element of the feature.

Written by Jing-Kong Tsui (Witch from Nepal), Look Out, Officer! is well-written and benefits from the strong script. Tsui is a gifted screenwriter and the story and characters are well drawn out, too. The screenplay manages to create a lot of fun scenarios for the characters and the dialogue between characters adds whimsy to the film.

Directed by Sze-Yu Lau (New Tales of the Flying Fox, Saga of the Phoenix), Look Out, Officer! is a strong action-comedy classic and a good showcase for Lau. Look Out, Officer! is well-directed – with the film emphasizing action and comedy in good measure. Look Out, Officer! had great comedic scenes.

Released on Blu-ray by Shout Factory, Look Out, Officer! is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.86:1 widescreen. The high-definition video transfer looks excellent overall. The transfer appears filmic and has good detail. There isn't a lot of damage or wear to the print. A solid encode by Shout Factory.

Look Out, Officer! is a fun action-comedy classic. Fans of classic action films should absolutely check it out. There is a lot to admire about the film. The filmmaking is exciting and there is a lot worth celebrating about the cast. Stephen Chow is a comedic genius and he was the MVP of the film. Highly recommended.
