Overview

Little Orphan Sammy / The Little Blue Box (1977-1979)

After getting his start working in New York’s budding sex film industry in the late 1960s, director Don Walters helmed a series of low budget, big idea hardcore comedies throughout the 1970s, always infusing his flair for creative editing and hearty sense of humor. Presented here are two of his key efforts, both newly restored from their original negatives and both starring vehicles for the incomparable Jennifer Welles. In LITTLE ORPHAN SAMMY (1976), Welles stars Hata Mari, a cold and calculating villain whose top stooge, big business politician Daddy Sawbucks, seeks to grow his oil fortune while unknowingly helping Hata Mari in her diabolical plan to sell national secrets to the enemy. After adopting Sammy, a highly patriotic orphan, as a cover for her evil plot, Sammy proves himself to be an ongoing accidental obstacle to her carefully staged plans. An uproarious satire of American conservatism and big business, LITTLE ORPHAN SAMMY co-stars Jamie Gillis, Kim Pope, Helen Madigain, CJ Laing, and Rocky Millstone as Sammy. Jennifer Welles plays two roles in LITTLE BLUE BOX (1978), the sultry Ms. Azure and the frigid Jen. When struggling writer John needs new inspiration, the acquisition of a mysterious box proves the perfect solution as it makes all of his wildest sexual fantasies come true, in living color. Co-starring Sharon Mitchell, Gloria Leonard, and Ming Toy.

Little Orphan Sammy

  • Interview (26:27, HD) features director Dan Walters, who details her relationship with actress Jennifer Welles, originally meeting the star when she worked as a showgirl. Dealing with a large amount of outtakes, "The Little Blue Box" was created, referring to the endeavor as a "compilation" film. Memories of the cast are shared, including John Leslie's love of accents and his ability to perform under any conditions. Gloria Leonard is labeled as a gossip, well aware of what was going on in the adult industry. Sharon Mitchell was a newcomer, willing to help co-stars in need of inspiration. For "Little Orphan Sammy," production commenced after a financier was eager to get into the business, with the script created in a few days. Casting is examined, with star Rocky Millstone handed a "performance" test before being hired for the job, and locations are recalled, as part of the picture was shot at a New Jersey dump. Creating "soft" and "hard" versions of "Little Orphan Sammy," Walters was left with a comedy that confused its target demographic. The interviewee also details budgetary limitations, admitting that box office returns were underwhelming with the silly movie.
