Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman October 14, 2014

Note: This film is included in the bundle Leprechaun: The Complete Movie Collection.

Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood probably should have been picketed by some activist group, but I’ll leave it to finer minds to determine whether that coalition should have been Irish or African American. In an at times unintentionally hilarious but still somewhat objectionable entry in the Leprechaun canon, our evil mischief maker (played for the last time—so far, anyway—by Warwick Davis), is once again in an urban environment, though this time without even the “saving grace” of rap music.

This particular outing could almost be thought of as a none too successful attempt to reboot the Blaxploitation craze of any earlier era, though with characters as resolutely unappealing as the gaggle of mendacious youths rampaging through this film (not to mention the always nasty leprechaun himself), exploitation starts to feel a little like abuse after a while. Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood actually has one redeeming characteristic, however: a surprisingly effective little animated sequence that serves as this film's prologue.

Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.5 of 5

Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. While this is probably overall one of the nicer looking transfers in the Leprechaun set, there are occasional issues with softness and once again slightly variable contrast which tends to afflict dimmer sequences. Colors are nicely vivid and accurate looking, and detail can be quite appealing, especially in close-ups. There are no issues with artifacts or digital tweaking of the image.

Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood's lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mix is another surprisingly forceful affair, with some good, robust lower frequencies, but nothing that overwhelms the clarity of the midrange. Dialogue, music and effects are all well balanced and prioritized on this problem free track.

Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  2.0 of 5

Three commentaries? That might seem a bit excessive for a film of such limited ambitions and haphazard execution as Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, but it at least helps, along with the other supplements, to make this release a bit more appealing. The film has little to offer other than a rote scare or two, with surprisingly little whimsy, let alone outright comedy. Technical merits are generally very good to excellent for those interested in this title.
