Note: This film is included in the bundle Leprechaun: The Complete Movie Collection.
By the time this fourth installment in the Leprechaun franchise rolled around (and/or blasted off, given its outer space setting), there
was a definite feeling that the “creatives” behind the series were struggling to find something to do with the malevolent little character played
so inimitably by Warwick Davis. This particular enterprise is one of the campier outings in the series, one that often plays like a millennial reboot
of an old Flash Gordon serial, albeit with a vicious little leprechaun at its core.
Leprechaun 4: In Space is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. While the elements here are in very good condition, there seem to be slight color timing issues, with a lot of the film having a slightly pale purple- bluish quality, something that detracts minimally from detail and which is also exacerbated by some less than consistent contrast. As a result, this is one of the overall murkier looking releases in the Leprechaun set, though detail can still pop convincingly in close-ups (see screenshot 3). Overall, though, things look relatively soft throughout this presentation, without much evident pop in the visuals.
There are no issues with Leprechaun 4: In Space's lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track. This feature has perhaps more consistent use of sound effects than several other films in the series, and they ring out here with accuracy if not a lot of sonic punch. Dialogue is presented very cleanly and there is no damage of any import to discuss.
In space no one can hear you scream about how ridiculous the Leprechaun series was becoming at this point. For fans of the film (and there are fans of this film), technical merits are good (video) to excellent (audio), and once again the supplementary package is quite inviting.
