Leprechaun 3 Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman October 14, 2014

Note: This film is included in the bundle Leprechaun: The Complete Movie Collection.

Let’s be honest and face it: the Leprechaun franchise is not exactly a paradigm of horror excellence. The series is decidedly low rent and for certain horror fans, that’s part of its charm. And what frankly could be lower rent then sending the series’ titular villain to Las Vegas? This third entry in the series does exactly that, and for those who don’t demand Laurence Olivier caliber acting or David Lean caliber filmmaking, Leprechaun 3 is goofily entertaining in its own way.

Among the wackier elements in this direct to video sequel is a victim of the leprechaun’s bite who, werewolf style, begins to exhibit signs of being a leprechaun himself. There’s also a manic sequence involving a women (played by Caroline Williams) whose wish to reclaim her zaftig youthful self leads to unexpected consequences. Leprechaun 3 plays things for laughs a bit more overtly than the somewhat darker first two entries, and for those willing to just go with the flow (and/or roulette ball), there’s some enjoyable content here.

Leprechaun 3 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.5 of 5

Leprechaun 3 is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78.1. While this was a direct to video release, IMDb has listed the film's original aspect ratio as 1.85:1, and there does not appear to be the same sort of slight anamorphic stretching here that was evident in Leprechaun. That said, framings sometimes tend to not have much headroom (see screenshot 1). Other than this anomaly, the transfer here looks surprisingly good, with strong, accurate looking colors, and appealing detail. Contrast is very good throughout this presentation, and the image is stable with no artifacting issues.

Leprechaun 3 Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

Leprechaun 3's lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mix does a fine job catching the busy, noisy atmosphere of a Las Vegas casino, while also supporting (relatively) quieter dialogue sequences. Fidelity is fine and there are no issues of any kind with this track.

Leprechaun 3 Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

  • Audio Commentary with Director Brian Trenchard-Smith

  • The Leprechaun Chronicles Part Three - Place Your Bets (1080p; 29:50)

  • Theatrical Trailer (1080i; 1:00)

Leprechaun 3 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  2.5 of 5

A lot of Leprechaun fans tend to prefer the somewhat darker first two films, but I've always had a soft spot for Leprechaun 3, simply because it's so resolutely silly. You may not find a pot of gold in this particular Las Vegas, but you'll get a laugh or two out of Davis' patently hyperbolic performance here. Technical merits are generally quite strong on this release and the supplementary package is once again excellent.
