Leprechaun 2 Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman October 14, 2014
Note: This film is included in the bundle Leprechaun: The Complete Movie Collection.
If a certain monster got a potential spouse in Bride of
Frankenstein, why can’t a little leprechaun? That seems to have been the guiding premise behind this second Leprechaun
outing, one which ports over Warwick Davis as the petulant little green man but which is otherwise a sequel in name only. There is at least a
certain structural similarity here, with a prologue setting up the main storyline. In this case, a millennium old attempt by the leprechaun to get
hitched is finally realized in 20th century Los Angeles.

This film continues to offer a showcase for Warwick Davis’ singular talents, but it otherwise is a pretty shoddy (some might even say smarmy)
exercise, one undercut by the not quite ready for prime time performance by Shevonne Durkin as the young girl the leprechaun sets his eyes on
as a potential bride. There are still some scattered scares here and at least the attempt at campy comedy, but this is one film that probably
should have stayed over the rainbow.
Leprechaun 2 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

Leprechaun 2 is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. Considering the very
low budget of this film, this high definition presentation is surprisingly vivid looking, with a clear, stable picture and accurate looking and nicely
saturated colors. Contrast is more consistent here than in the first film, adding definition to the misty, darker sequences. Detail is quite
appealing in close-ups, though some of the seams of Davis' makeup can be spotted.
Leprechaun 2 Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

Leprechaun 2 features a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track that sports reasonable fidelity and decent dynamic range, at least given
an understanding of the film's less than fulsome budget. Dialogue comes through just fine, though there are occasional very slight issues with
distortion and crackling that appear to be source related.

Leprechaun 2 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Leprechaun 2 is still able to whip up a few scares and some intermittent laughs, but it can be a slog to get through, with an over
convoluted plot and some less than Oscar worthy performances. Technical merits here are generally very good and the supplementary package
is excellent, for those considering a purchase.
