Overview

Legacy of Rage (1986)

Bruce Lee's only son, Brandon Lee (The Crow, Rapid Fire), proves he is every bit his father's son in his only Hong Kong movie, a violent tale of friendship, betrayal, and revenge. Lee plays Brandon Ma, a regular guy working in Hong Kong, who is set up by his drug-dealing best friend Michael (Michael Wong, Firestorm, Cold War, Transformers: Age of Extinction), to take the rap for the murder of an undercover cop. Michael also has eyes for Brandon's girl, May (Regina Kent). While Brandon languishes in jail, May gives birth to their child and flees to Brazil to avoid the lurid clutches of Michael, who has become a big crime boss. Brandon gets out of prison after eight years, learns the truth, and goes after Michael for revenge. Brandon Lee's riveting presence and raw intensity make this film a rare treat. The action is explosive, akin to John Woo's Hollywood action epics. This singular film, which is definitely a must-see for Brandon Lee fans, was directed by Ronny Yu (The Bride With White Hair, Jet Li’s Fearless, Freddy Vs. Jason and Bride Of Chucky).

Legacy of Rage Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard April 23, 2025

Legacy of Rage is an excellent action feature with a great story. Produced by Linda Kuk (Hard Boiled, Treasure Hunt) and John Sham (Royal Warriors, An Autumn's Tale), Legacy of Rage is a fun genre production. Starring Brandon Lee, Michael Wong, Regina Kent, and Michael Wai-Man Chan.

Brandon Ma (Brandon Lee) lives a simple life and is an ordinary guy with a rather sweet and beautiful girlfriend, May (Regina Kent). Meanwhile, Brandon is close friends with drug dealer Michael (Michael Wong). Michael devises a plan to steal Brandon’s girlfriend and he kills a cop he won’t trust with the drug deals.

After the murder, Michael decides to frame Brandon for the crime and carry out the plan – stealing the heart of the beautiful May so she becomes his own lover. Can Brandon get out of prison, clear his good name, and find revenge?

Brandon Lee impresses in the leading role of Legacy of Rage. The performance allows Lee to showcase both his action skills and his dramatic chops. Regina Kent also impresses as May. The performance showcases Kent’s impressive range as an actress. The supporting performances are also effective especially from Michael Wong.

The production has a number of effective design elements. Legacy of Rage features art direction by Tony Au (Boat People, Profiles of Pleasure). The art direction is well-done and highlights some fun production elements. There is a lot to appreciate about the design work done – such as the nice production design.

The action is one of the most invigorating aspects of Legacy of Rage. The action filmmaking is top-notch. The action coordination by Hoi Mang (Royal Warriors, Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain) and the fight scenes are well choreographed. The stunt work adds a lot to the filmmaking and makes it all the more entertaining.

Composed by Richard Yuen (The Bride with White Hair, When Fortune Smiles), Legacy of Rage is a solid score. The music by Yuen is well-done and certainly adds to the filmmaking. The score provides a nice backdrop to the action. The score works well for the dramatic scenes, too.

The cinematography by Hau-Ming Chan (My Family, Fractured Follies) is beautiful and poetic. The visuals make a wonderful impression. Chan is a talented cinematographer and creates some fantastic vistas for the filmmaking to soar.

Edited by Yee-Shun Wong (Dragon Rider, Mr. Coconut), Legacy of Rage is well-done from an editing standpoint. The ebb and flow of Legacy of Rage is well-done. Legacy of Rage is well-paced throughout and it finds the right balance.

Written by Clifton Ko (Laughter of the Water Margins, How to Be a Millionaire) and Raymond Fung (For Your Heart Only, Esprit D'amour), Legacy of Rage has a solid script. The characterizations are well done. The central characters and the romantic element of the storyline impress. The story is well-done and enhances the filmmaking.

Directed by Ronny Yu (The Bride with White Hair, Warriors of Virtue), Legacy of Rage is a fun action feature. Yu creates a good sense of scale and scope to the production. The vision of Legacy of Rage impresses in spades. The action scenes are well-directed and Yu creates a sense of urgency to the feature.
