Director Carlos Tobalina endeavors to make a private detective tale with 1983’s “Las Vegas Girls,” but he doesn’t seem to have enough story or even footage to complete it. But hey, that’s not going to stop the helmer, who tries to slap together a semi-coherent tale of a runaway in Sin City, and the two professionals hired to find her and bring her back to her guardians. There could be suspense, maybe drama or light comedy, but Tobalina ends up with a mess that doesn’t seem to have any idea what it wants to be. Even for adult cinema, “Las Vegas Girls” is fairly slapdash, wandering around from scene to scene without much in the way of focus. There are plenty of erotic detours, as to be expected, but it’s strange to watch Tobalina basically give up on the offering at the halfway mark after establishing a case with some potential in the screenplay.

Mr. Harrison is a rich Texas oilman concerned about his daughter, Lynn, who’s run away from his home, with her whereabouts unknown. Joined by his wife (Liz Renay), Harrison places a call to the Miller Detective Agency in New York City, looking to hire help to find the teenager. Dan (Dan Boulder) and Joyce (Karen Hall) are selected for the job, meeting with the Harrisons to better understand the situation. There’s a lead involving Lynn’s presence in Las Vegas, inspiring the private detectives to accept a wad a cash from their employer and set up shop in town, renting a casino hotel suite. Dan’s plan involves posing as a big time swinger, hosting sex parties as a way to meet local women and connect with men who might know where Lynn is. Joyce tours the casinos, contributing to detective work that’s slowly compromised by carnal interests, with Dan enjoying his position of power as the team struggles to locate any sign of the young woman.

“Las Vegas Girls” isn’t made with care. Tobalina doesn’t have the time to offer dramatic hospital corners for the story, but the mission for Dan and Joyce is passably interesting, sent to Las Vegas to find the daughter of a wealthy man and his nutty wife. Film fans have been here before, but the idea is enough to power a reasonably engaging adult endeavor, following Dan and Joyce as they arrive in town and prepare for their investigation. Of course, Tobalina makes sure to follow nearly every step of the trip, including the selection of a rental car, helping to pad “Las Vegas Girls” before it even begins. However, there’s time spent shooting city signage and marquees (a local movie theater is playing 1980’s “Oh God! Book II,” which clarifies how old the footage was before it saw release), which ends up being more entertaining than the tale the production is struggling to sell.

Dan’s plan to find Lynn (who isn’t even named until much later in the movie) is to become a sex machine, organizing parties in his suite to help meet people and fish for information. Some brief questioning is presented, but “Las Vegas Girls” is mostly about carnal events, with a hot tub party turning into group activity. Joyce tries to remain professional, as Dan would like to enjoy her during their time on the strip, and the picture eventually separates the characters, who explore the town on their own. Joyce heads around the area, briefly visiting casinos to visibly spot Lynn. Dan elects to go to a brothel to find the teen, easily distracted by the employees, who put on a show for the customer before he joins in. Not much is accomplished there, but not much is accomplished in “Las Vegas Girls.”

The image presentation (1.85:1 aspect ratio) for "Las Vegas Girls" is listed as "newly scanned and restored in 2K" from "35mm negatives." The movie has the advantage of working with the sights of Sin City, and lighting displays add rich color to the viewing experience, along with the brightness of marquees. Casino interiors and hotel rooms also provide vivid primaries, along with personal style choices. Blue skies are distinct, along with hair color. Skin tones are natural. Detail is there, doing okay with ample skin particulars and fine hairs. Costuming remains fibrous with sheer lingerie outfits and heavier casual wear. Hotel interiors remain deep, occasionally cavernous as the action heads into a suite. Exteriors maintain compelling dimension, with the added bonus of Vegas-spotting, exploring decorative additions and promotional displays. Source has its rough spots, encountering points of damage and discoloration. Scratches are present as well. Some footage of actress Liz Renay found at the end of the film also carries camera damage.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA is a straightforward understanding of "Las Vegas Girls." Age is present, with a few muffled passages, but intelligibility is present during the listening event, picking up on the amateur performances. Music isn't sharp, but understood, with muddier vocals at times.

Las Vegas Girls Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

What's strange about "Las Vegas Girls" is its quick disinterest in the missing woman story. The saga of Lynn and her whereabouts is solved just over halfway through the picture, and done so as an afterthought, with Tobalina employing random footage from "Mexico" to solve the mystery, which, amazingly, isn't even news to her guardians. Yes, this is an adult movie, and any expectation for polished filmmaking is ridiculous, but it remains surprising to see how little Tobalina cares here, eventually laboring to turn the production into a love story between Dan and Joyce. "Las Vegas Girls" doesn't benefit from such wild turns of tone and plot, and a refocus to a last act filled with sex scenes takes away what little fun there is watching the characters briefly explore a 1980 Las Vegas without permission from the casinos or the city.
