Overview

La Fièvre monte a El Pao (1959)

In remote El Pao, the island's unseen leader governs from afar while thousands of prisoners labor endlessly constructing the local plantation. Governor Vargas is shockingly assassinated by Lt. García who blames it on Ramón Vászquez, the governor's aide. His reasoning is Vászquez's affair with the governor's wife Inés. As the newly elected governor, Vasquez must reconcile his liberal politics with the oppressive dogma of the ex-dictator. Meanwhile Alejandro Gual, a military leader, tries to usurp Garcia's power and to turn Inés against her lover.
