They may not be horses (or, more accurately, ponies), or in fact magically transformed girls who used to be ponies, but for all intents and purposes, the young lasses in Lego Friends: Girlz 4 Life plays an awful lot like any given My Little Pony: Equestria Girls outing, with a coterie of young girls making friends and (in this particular case) music while learning valuable lessons in the arts of perserverance and honesty. There’s nothing very remarkable about Lego Friends: Girlz 4 Life, as in fact tends to be the case with the Equestria Girl franchise, but for those with younger girls at home, this direct to video release offers a bit over an hour of passable entertainment.

The story (such as it is) revolves around the “friends”, a gaggle of what are apparently high school or middle school aged girls, who have formed a band who write a surefire hit song called “Girlz”. They seem to be on the fast track to stardom when a superstar named Livi might be interested in the tune, but a nefarious manager gets involved and the girls (no Z this time) watch as their material is stolen and passed off as the work of someone else. Guess how everything turns out? Lego Friends: Girlz 4 Life has a fairly middling song score, with a ballad sounding better than any of the putative uptempo music, but there’s enough glitz and glamor here to most likely enchant younger girls for an hour or so.

Lego Friends: Girlz 4 Life is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Lego and Warner Brothers Animation with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. While quite bright and colorful, the look of this offering suffers from a textureless presentation that often looks pretty rubbery and not overly detailed. Within that context, things look reasonably sharp here, with good attention paid to both character designs and backgrounds. Occasional light banding creeps into the rubbery surfaces of various objects (including faces) when various lighting and/or shadow schemes are employed.

Lego Friends: Girlz 4 Life features a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which provides decent immersion when the lackluster song score is part of the story. Otherwise, this is a fairly restrained track that offers good support for front-centric dialogue elements. Fidelity is fine and dynamic range relatively wide courtesy of the music.

LEGO Friends: Girlz 4 Life Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

As I "confessed" in my My Little Pony: Equestria Girls Blu-ray review, as the father of boys I've "missed out" on releases geared toward a female demographic. A lot of these straight to video releases follow pretty much exactly the same template, with a team working together to overcome obstacles, all the time while learning valuable lessons about friendship, honor and whatever other True Blue virtues need to be addressed. Lego Friends: Girlz 4 Life follows that template to a tee, and for those with young girls at home, this is certainly affable enough. Technical merits are generally strong for those considering a purchase.
